Released in 2010, Jazz Genius: The Flamingo Era is the ideal sequel to Proper's Little Giant, which examined saxophonist Tubby Hayes' recording activity as sideman and leader during the years 1954-1956. Jazz Genius follows his progress from 1956 through 1961, an exciting period during which he enlarged upon the Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie/James Moody influences by continuing to absorb what was in the air while tapping into his own intuitive gifts, branching out from tenor and baritone saxes to demonstrate a developing facility on both vibraphone and flute. Drawn from six different albums, these 41 selections were originally recorded for the Ember label which was operated by Jeff Kruger, owner of the Flamingo Club in Soho.

Brighter Day album by Ronny Jordan was recorded 08/1999 and released Mar 14, 2000 on the Blue Note label. A Brighter Day was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. This self-taught guitarist breezes into the "Mambo Inn" for Latin spice, over to "New Delhi" for an acoustic Middle Eastern rendezvous, and on to a beefy B3 organ BBQ that grounds his mellifluous guitar flow on "London Lowdown," with the ease of a jet-setting, six-string seducer. Guests at the party include Roy Ayers adding his intoxicating vibes to a champagne-chilled cover of his own "Mystic Voyage," renowned drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts giving "5/8 Flow" its straight-ahead Brubeck-like kick, and rapper Mos Def dropping rhymes over DJ-Spinna's remix of the title track. The acid jazz craze may have fizzled, but Jordan keeps pouring smoothies from his golden-toned guitar blender that have enough adventurous flavors to satisfy.

"Money, Sex & Power" marks the third album from German band Kissin' Dynamite, following their debut "Steel Of Swabia” (2008) and "Addicted To Metal" (2010). Musically it sounds modern but it definitely has a 1980s feel with great screaming vocals and some strong riffs throughout, and that is definitely necessary as this seems to be a genre that is growing once again. Fortunately this band of Germans manage to keep their heads above water amid the growing throng.

Verdi’s Jerusalem is not merely a version of I Lombardi. It is so different to its progenitor that Verdi wished to have an Italian translation of this French work introduced to La Scala as a new piece. The full story is clearly explained in Alexandra Maria Dielitz’s excellent notes to this DVD. This production was filmed at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. It is sung in French and, appropriately, conducted by a Frenchman, Michel Plasson. Most of the singers are Italian, presumably members of the Carlo Felice theatre company…

…This record is a must for all lovers of this music. Sensibly, the Freiburger Barockorchester Consort do not give us all the Biber sonatas, mixing them with the 2 Muffatt ones. Some purists might prefer a disc which includes all the Biber sonatas, but with such lovely performances here I just hope that we get the rest of the sonatas on another disk.
