In the 1940s, before magnetic tape was widely available in the United States, electronic music pioneer Tod Dockstader made low-fi recordings on steel wire.
Born in 1932, Dockstader was part of the first wave of electronic musicians, who, before the advent of synthesizers in the early 1960s, worked with whatever hardware they could find: reel-to-reel tape machines, sine wave generators and a wild array of homemade circuits and military surplus gear. In the process, they created a universe of electronic music that still sounds unique and prescient today

The sole album of that US band was released on ABC Records in late 1968 and contained ambitious and complex tracks full of interesting ideas and psychedelic sounds (with some pop and early progressive rock influences) - reminiscent of US bands like Freeborne, The Beacon Street Union, Sagittarius and Ford Theatre, but also similar to some late 60's works of The Beatles, The Moody Blues and Pretty Things. Anyway, this great, but still underrated LP surely requires a lot of attention. In addition 2 rare non-LP single tracks were included here as a bonus. This CD was carefully remastered from the original, analogue source and sounds really great!

This excellent 3-CD set collects two 10" albums by Shank and 4 12" albums co-led by Shank and Cooper, all for the Pacific Jazz/World Pacific labels between 1954-58. The West Coast cool school was at its height at this time, and both Bud Shank and Bob Cooper were in the thick of it. The first disc gets off to a rousing start with the marvelously swinging VALVE IN HEAD from 1954, with Bud playing fluid alto sax. He's joined by three valve trombone players (Bob Enevoldsen, Stu Williamson, and the ringer Maynard Ferguson) on this tune and for the first half of the disc, an interesting concept. The second half finds him with Coop at Cal Tech in 1959. Count Basie's THE KING gets a rousing airing, and there's a nicely done ballad medley.

Quantum Fantay started in 2004 when Pete Mush and Jaro formed a new band after they've both been in the now disbanded "Oregon". Quantum Fantay plays a kind of music they like to describe as liquid space rock. If this discription sounds unfamiliar maybe the name of Ozric Tentacles does ring a bell. But QF is a lot more than just a clone of Ozric. Their music is sounding like a mixture of progressive rock, electronic music, groove, world music and most of all psychedelic rock, it also contains elements of reggae and dub.

The trio "Paradoxical Frog", made up of pianist Kris Davis, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tyshawn Sorey made a significant mark with its self-titled debut album in 2010. The three musicians, who all contribute compositions to the group, have a shared ability to create dramatic musical peaks and valleys while moving in and out of a composition in a seamless motion. This is why listeners in NY and all over the world continually seek out this unique and ever changing group. "Union" is the second take of the project, confirming that the music from their first release didn’t simply result from a happy gathering of circumstances.

Paradise Lost's thirteenth studio album, released in 2012 on CD, Double-CD and special Fan Box editions featuring bonus tracks. It's a masterful release by any criteria. It's a welcome alternative to the dearth of extreme metal that has been residing in our CD players for the last several months.

Sometimes a disc's title can be just a bit too clever for its own good. From a glance at this disc's cover, with its title "Le Chant de Virgile", you'd never know that it contained first class works by Josquin, Senfl, Lassus, Mouton, Willaert, and Cipriano de Rore, among others. Sure, when you read the fine print on the reverse side of the disc packaging, you discover that the program is a celebration of Renaissance works whose texts are drawn from "Virgil, Horace, and Catullus"–but why not make this clear from the outset?
