Dora Schwartzberg is a well-known teacher, soloist and orchestral musician, originally from Russia, but now living in Vienna. She is best known to disc-buyers as a chamber music colleague of Martha Argerich and others of the Martha Argerich Project, part of the Lugano Festival. With members of the Project she has recorded the Schumann Piano Quartet and Quintet for EMI and the Schumann violin sonatas for the present label avanticlassics, of which more later. She is heard again in Schumann’s Fantasiestücke on this disc and in two of the most famous French violin sonatas.

Shortly after Art Pepper's death in 1982, JVC Records in Japan began issuing a series of titles of the great saxophonist's performances in Japan. This set, recorded in 1979, was compiled from two different July performances and features the classic Pepper quartet with pianist George Cables, drummer Billy Higgins, and the great Tony Dumas on bass. Pepper played only alto on the dates, and these five tunes offer a portrait of the musician at the very top of his form and very inspired…

Cal Tjader (Missouri, 1925-1982) was completing its passage through Verve between 1960 and 1968 when, at the peak of its recognition as a jazz musician and his contribution to Latin music fusion, launched this meritorious work, in which meets 9 songs accompanied by a large group of musicians with metal, strings and percussion. Most of the arrangements are made by the composer, arranger and saxophonist Benny Golson. Since the beginning of the disc with 'Blues March' to the closing with 'Song of Ossanha' Tjader does not let us forget for one moment with his performances that jazz is his native language and he amply demonstrates that dominates it with complete fluency. Every issue becomes a vehicle for showcasing their sound between scents of waltz, bossa, swing, gospel, etc.., But always with the accent that Cal gives to his work.

Teddy Pendergrass started singing gospel music in Philadelphia churches, becoming an ordained minister at ten years old. While attending public school, he sang in the citywide McIntyre Elementary School Choir and in the All-City Stetson Junior High School Choir. A self-taught drummer, Pendergrass had a teen pop vocal group when he was 15. By his late teens, Pendergrass was a drummer for local vocal group the Cadillacs.
