    Contemporary Classical, Choral | Channel Classics | 2010 | 63:50 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Booklet | Various File Hosts | 216 MB
Swedish Radio Choir, Peter Dijkstra, conductor

Channel Classics has taken a turn into new territory with this release of sacred choral works by contemporary Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström (b. 1942) – and it turns out to be one of the label’s most engaging, enlightening – and exciting – discs of the year. ...it challenges our traditional expectations of what a choral concert is about. Here we’re confronted with music that doesn’t fit any regular form, yet faithfully follows time-honored biblical texts, from the Psalms to the Mass to the Song of Songs. ... Sandstrom writes with an assured understanding of voices, ...and while his works are for the most part extremely challenging, both for listeners and performers, the musical language is fresh and vital and perfectly suited to the medium.

Album released in Spain collecting original recordings of the great flamenco singer Antonio Fernández Díaz, alias 'Fosforito', one of the most prestigious singers in flamenco history and certainly the most honored for his career, including the 5th 'Llave de Oro del Cante' in 2005 (only 4 great singers possessed it before). Fosforito has been master creator of flamenco styles like 'polo', 'zángano', 'debla', 'ferreña' and 'taranto from Almería'. He has recorded more than thirty musical productions (not counting compilations), of which it has been recognized 'the work for universal dignity of flamenco, the relevance of their creative contributions to revitalizing disused styles'. His work is essential to the approach or immersion in the intricacies of flamenco. Fosforito is sober and deep, without concessions to the easy. Without discussion this is one of the most brilliant careers in flamenco singing of all time.

Johannes Eccard (1553–1611) was a German composer and kapellmeister. He was an early principal conductor at the Berlin court chapel. (…) Eccard and his school are inseparably connected with the history of the Protestant Reformation. Of Eccard's songs a great many collections are extant such as those published in Der Evangelische Kirchengesang (1843) by Baron Karl Georg August Vivigens von Winterfeld.

    Extreme Gothic Metal

UK extreme metallers Cradle of Filth are set to release their new masterwork 'The Manticore & other Horrors' this Hallowe'en on Peaceville Records. The title of this, Cradle Of Filth's tenth studio full-length, can be likened to a bestiary, a collection of stories on Monsters; personal demons, Chimeras, literary fiends and world-enslaving entities to blame but a few, Manticore being the ravening title track. It is a song about a beautiful mythological horror that comes to be feared as the disfigurehead of foreign occupation in the Indian provinces. The songs Illicitus and Pallid Reflection bare the sweet ingredients of vampirism and lycanthropy; the wicked For Your Vulgar Delectation and Frost On her Pillow are woven perversely into grim fairytales, whilst classic, monumental tracks like The Abhorrent and Siding With The Titans both extol tentacular Lovecraftian values.

The Story of the Animals has been well told across innumerable books and CD compilations over the year - including Raven's own and definitive Absolute Animals 1964-1968 (RVCD-178). The task here then is not to restate the band's history, but to explore the music contained within. Gratefully Dead 1964-1968 is not a "Greatest Hits" package (as Absolute Animals most assuredly is), rather a trawl through a selection of outstanding album cuts and rare B-sides that will give even further insight into the musical depth of one of the most inventive and best loved bands of the 1960s.

The centenary of the birth of Luigi Dallapiccola prompted something of a reassessment of the Italian composer whose reputation, in the three decades since his death, has been accorded passive respect rather than active promotion. The relatively limited extent of his output, some four dozen works, is belied by its diversity of expression, though following such powerful wartime works as Canti di prigionia (1941) and the opera Il prigioniero (1948), Dallapiccola’s music tends to the contemplative and philosophic, qualities for which his magnum opus, the opera Ulisse, was …….

A couple of years ago I was interviewing Francis Jocky, a singer/songwriter from The Cameroon in Africa, and was rather taken aback by his answer to my question about early his musical influences. "I started being interested in music when I was eight years old, and I was listening to Bob Marley, Randy Newman and Jackson Browne". While it's pretty typical for a kid from Africa to have been listening to Marley, and the fact he was listening to Newman was surprising, what really shocked me was he had heard of Jackson Browne let alone had listened to him in The Cameroon.
