This is an amazing and very smart selection of contemporary music from russian composers. The highlights are with no doubt the wonderful Schnittke's 4th violin concerto and the very interesting ballet by Lourié. Kremer's playing is superb and Eschenbach's accompaniment is
ideal. A great sample to introduce into the modern academic russian music.

Chandos has already issued a recording of one of Bainton's major Australian works, his Second Symphony, but this collection is devoted to much earlier pieces. The Concerto Fantasia, completed in 1920, is the major work here - a 30-minute, five-movement concertante piece for piano and orchestra that's a genuinely fresh attempt to breathe new life into the concerto form.

This is a prestige issue if ever there was one, not so much for its music (though in fact this very apt coupling is not otherwise available) as for its presentation and aural glamour. Naturally DGG is proud to have its new contract with the Boston Orchestra, and the German engineers have done marvels in a new environment at capturing the characteristic Boston sound.

Pianist Fred Hersch has found a place to come alive: The Village Vanguard, where so many great live albums have been recorded. Saxophonists John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, pianist Bill Evans and drummer Paul Motian also found the New York City venue a prime spot for live recordings. Hersch revisits the venue with Alive the the Vanguard, following Live at the Village Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2003), an excellent trio affair with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits, and Alone at the Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2011), an extraordinary solo outing.

The album is a powerful beast with an anthemic heart and adrenaline soaked pulse that is sure to please all heavy metal fans. Traditional heavy metal infused with power/epic elements and once again a central theme; this time a little bit wider and general: the great wars and battles.

Slow moving of life in marshland, minimal water movements. But it gets more active in times.
