Noted as an influence on Grainger, Vaughan Williams, and other contemporaries, Cyril Scott was possibly the most experimental of English composers in the early twentieth century. His chromatically ambiguous and highly atmospheric music was considered daring for its time, but today it seems no harder to grasp than, say, late Strauss or early Bartók. Indeed, Scott's String Quartet No. 1 may remind the listener of Bartók's first quartet, for both composers shared an uncanny affinity for enharmonically modulating counterpoint, elegiac ……

Album published during the '60s and directed by Bob Shad, a direct competitor of the label Command led by Enoch Light. The recording is performed by the Hal Mooney orchestra. Although in his early years Mooney played piano in orchestras likethe one of Jimmy Dorsey, after the WWII began making musical arrangements and gain fame at Universal Studios of Hollywood, where arranged topics for Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland Billy Eckstine and others. Later, between 1956 and the late 60s, he joined Mercury Records, where he developed much of his most recognized career, composing for singers like Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington and Nina Simone. During 70's he moved to Universal Studios until 1977 where he became a director and musical supervisor, in many films and TV series.

Album performed by the Italian American accordionist and arranger Angelo DiPippo, still active in New York. He began playing the accordion at the age of 8 years and during his long career he has collaborated and recorded with numerous artists such as Billy Eckstein, Harry Belafonte, Debbye Reynolds, Randy Newman, Peggy Lee, Gilbert Becaud, etc. and even for the baritone Robert Merrill, for over 20 years. He has participated in numerous television shows, has intervened with his accordion in various films (as in 'The Godfather (I)'-wedding-scene-, 'The fiddler on the Roof ',' Irma La Douce' and others) and has been recognized as the best accordionist in the prestigious American 'Keyborad Magazine Poll '. This CD includes Italian music in styles like tarantelas, polkas or waltzes.

This LP features the rhythm section of Circle (pianist Chick Corea, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul) playing rather advanced improvisations on group originals (highlighted by Holland's "Toy Room") and "Nefertiti." Influenced by the early Art Ensemble of Chicago, this music is rather free and avant-garde but rewards close listenings.

The collaboration heard on 54 had its origins back in the 90's when Vince Mendoza asked John Scofield to play on his first album. John has since been featured on two of Vince’s records and his guitar sound and improvisational skills work well within Vince’s concept. When Mendoza assumed directorship of The Metropole Orchestra, he and Scofield decided to collaborate again with a primary focus on Mendoza’s arrangements of Scofield compositions as performed with The Metropole Orchestra.
