Herbert and Harold Kalin, twin brother harmony singers, sang like a pop-focused version of the Everly Brothers, and they charted a few catchy records in 1958, including one Top Five hit. They represent one of the better acts to find a compromise between rock & roll and pop music, even if they weren't the Everlys by a long shot. Although Herbert and Harold were born in the same period as Elvis Presley, they came from more of a middle-class background, and from much further north as well. Not surprisingly, their musical preferences lay more with the pop music that preceded Elvis (so, to some degree, did Presley's own taste), and their music was closer in spirit to that tamer third wave of rock & roll, exemplified by Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, and Dion DiMucci.

Curtis Lee occupies the era of rock & roll in between the death of Buddy Holly and the arrival of the Beatles – a period usually thought of as "lost years," because, apart from the Beach Boys, few of the artists involved lingered long on the charts or left an obvious legacy into the next era. Neither did Lee, but two of his songs, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" and "Under the Moon of Love," evoke vivid associations with that innocent, romantic era.

Buddy Knox was the first artist of the rock & roll era to write and record his own number one hit, 1957's million-selling classic "Party Doll" – a pioneer of the Lone Star State rockabilly sound that would later earn the name "Tex-Mex," the arc of his career anticipated that of fellow Texan Buddy Holly, yet while Holly is now enshrined in the pantheon of rock's true immortals, Knox's contributions remain sadly underappreciated. This compilation, from Canadian label, contains all the Roulette and Liberty recordings.

The setting for Mikhail Glinka’s A Life for the Tsar is Russia and a Polish camp in 1613. Following the Russian revolution, the Communist regime renamed this intrinsically Russian opera after the main character, Ivan Susanin. The emphasis was then changed from the peasant's life given to save the Tsar for the Russian people, to the idea of Susanin deliverin Russia when threatened with attack from the Polish enemy. The original title and libretto have now been restored. Russian bass, Evgeny Nesterenko magnificently sings the dramatic role of Ivan Susanin, the tragic hero who leads the Polish enemy on a false path in their search for the Tsar, thereby permitting the Tsar's escape. With Marina Mescheriakova, Alexander Lomonosov and the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Playing acoustic guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, and mandolin, Kennedy and his trio play short tunes that identify real-life situations with actual solutions…..

This is the debut recording from one of Germany's most accomplished progressive rock bands. The band was originally co-led by vocalist Erich Schriever and guitarist Frank Bornemann, and the two differed on musical direction, which is evident here. The band was essentially a hard rock act at this time with a sound similar to Black Sabbath and Atomic Rooster. While Eloy would move in a more progressive direction, which would yield more consistent results, they would never sound as honest and vulnerable as they do here. Humble beginnings for one of progressive rock's most underrated bands.
