The Something Rain, Tindersticks' ninth album, stubbornly holds fast to the group's branded, nocturnal avant-pop, one that holds within it everything from subtly textured electronics and touches of jazz to cabaret, chanson, and melancholy indie pop. Vocalist Stuart Staples' signature dulcet baritone is as haunting as ever: it shivers almost constantly atop a mix that contains everything from carefully layered keyboards, bowed bass and cellos to spidery guitars, vibes, minimal drum kits, reeds, and loops. That Tindersticks' sonic universe is so carefully attended and guarded doesn't mean there isn't growth or daring – this is the most urgent recording they've made in over a decade – it's just that it's (mostly) very subtle.

Some of the greatest Miles Davis material ever recorded – and not really ever officially issued as an album until this collection! The recordings are from the magical year of 1958, a time when Miles was working in the Kind Of Blue mode – on the album of the same name, one of his all-time standout classics. The work on this set is in a very similar spirit – recorded by a sextet that includes the rhythm section of Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, and a young Bill Evans, who brings a magically modal feel to the album that really gives it an edge. Added to that are the saxophones of John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, blowing together in two ends of the soul spectrum, really stretching the color palette from Miles' usual work.

Texas-born singer Z.Z. Hill managed to resuscitate both his own semi-flagging career and the entire genre at large when he signed on at Jackson, MS-based Malaco Records in 1980 and began growling his way through some of the most uncompromising blues to be unleashed on black radio stations in many a moon. His impressive 1982 Malaco album Down Home Blues remained on Billboard's soul album charts for nearly two years, an extraordinary run for such a blatantly bluesy LP. His songs "Down Home Blues" and "Somebody Else Is Steppin' In" have graduated into the ranks of legitimate blues standards (and few of those have come along over the last couple of decades)

3 years after their last full length southern Germany loacted BITTERNESS (2 members of BITTERNESS also play in the German Black Metal band UNLIGHT) return with their 10th release since the founding in 2001. This three piece is an absolutely honest German underground act that sticks to their particular style for years now without taking care of major movements or trends within the scene. This is about pure Thrash Metal with Death Metal elements. Their productions have grown throughout the years and in terms of sound, “The Final Declaration Of The End” is their most matured work so far.

Hammock go massive as they meditate on grand themes of death and loss, their music ever larger, more expansive. Every song a mountaintop vista with a clear view to the horizon, unencumbered by clouds, in all directions. Departure Songs demands that it be played loudly so that the details in each track can breathe, whether it is the androgynous, falsetto vocals of Marc Byrd or the angelic voice of Christine Glass Byrd or just a little bit of guitar in the background, this record is nuanced in a most compelling fashion. The arrangements beg to be picked apart - soaring guitars, propulsive bass, and hypnotic strings. The vocals work wonderfully as an instrument, but when the words finally become understandable, they cause shivers.

Sleep Dirt was never conceived as a stand-alone album. Five of its seven tracks were suppose to appear on the ill-fated 1976 box set Läther; three had been recorded for Zoot Allures but were shelved after Zappa decided to trim it down from a double to a single LP; finally, three had been written as part of the abandoned musical Hunchentoot. Zappa pieced the album together from these various discarded parts. "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution" (one of the leftovers from Zoot Allures) is now considered to be one of his finest instrumental rock pieces.

Adopting the "why just sample when you can play with the original musicians?" mentality that only being with a label such as Realworld can bring, the collaboration between sitar guru Ananda Shankar and Asian undergrounders State of Bengal began life as a touring project before graduating to the studio. Having jammed with Jimi Hendrix in the late 1960s and recorded a series of acclaimed albums in the 70s (an original musician of the world before the term world music was invented), Shankar's work had become much sought after by 90s samplers.

Henri Dutilleux's latest orchestral work, ''The Shadows of Time,'' has much to recommend it on its own terms, but when Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony gave the work its New York premiere at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday evening, the piece also carried a provocative question for the start of a new concert season. It challenged listeners to remember the last time they had left a concert by a major American orchestra convinced that a freshly minted work was the highlight of the program, and to wonder why the experience was so rare. …

Two years ago, the Bad Plus released Never Stop, their first album of all-original material. The leaderless ensemble comprised of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King looked deeper inside the guts of the "jazz piano trio" than they ever had before. Made Possible extends that approach exponentially and unpredictably. They employ a looser advance here, with more adventurous compositions, arrangements, and the introduction of electronics into their music. Skeletal layers of synths and minimal use of electronic drums augment their acoustic presentation, adding an edgy, textural dimension to the proceedings.
