Born in 1945, Frederica von Stade – who auditioned for the Met on a $50 bet – is considered one of the world’s most accomplished mezzo-sopranos. This 4CD set celebrates her unique voice and spans the incredibly broad spectrum of styles for which she is known.

The Symphony No. 10 has a heartfelt Hymnus framed by a stunningly violent first movement and an equally riled war dance of a third movement. In fact that third movement had me thinking of Grainger's revolutionary ballet The Warriors. The first movement Ein Sturm is not quite as onomatopoeic as the similar works by Nystroem and Sibelius - both inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest. The Henze movement was not related to Shakespeare. All the music here is freely dissonant yet not fragmented. Henze holds true to the ‘long line’ in his thinking and expression.
The Montpellier orchestra know the music well for they give a virtuoso performance …….

Jarrett's 1970s albums may have confused some purists but they should be a goldmine for contemporary fans of all stripes who like improvised music. El Juicio is an excellent early Jarrett album and finds him in typically eclectic form with his classic American quartet. I nominate the opener, "Gypsy Moth," as the best piece on the record. Sounding a little like a more confident version of "Lisbon Stomp," from Jarrett's 1967 debut album Life Between the Exit Signs, Jarrett first whips up a rollicking theme on the piano and then switches to soprano sax towards the end, the rhythm section swinging hard throughout.

Up for It marks the 20th anniversary of Keith Jarrett's "Standards Trio," with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, and the group's 17th recording on ECM. (The figure is deceiving because many of these 17 albums have been multi-disc sets.) Up for It also signals a return to the Great American Songbook, after two recordings that were completely improvised, Inside Out and Always Let Me Go.

This set combines two of Sonny Rollins' LPs for Impulse Records, There Will Never Be Another You and On Impulse!, both of which were originally issued in 1965. There Will Never Be Another You featured the saxophonist playing a live set (in the rain, apparently) with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins and Mickey Roker on drums. Rollins is in fine form, playing standards including a nearly 17-minute version of the title tune.
