Mieczyslaw Weinberg (Sovietperiod: Vainberg) is an extremely subtle and delicate composer: the music breathes a warmth that is seldom found in contemporary classical music. Yet upon hearing Weinberg's works one is startled by their intrinsic power. The composer was a very modest person, and because of this he has remained unknown and in the shadow of others, even though his music is no less great.

Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. In 1960, they were signed to local Motown Records, changing their name to the Supremes in 1961.

Fusion bands can push contemporary jazz into fresh territory when they open up a brand new bag. Armed with a program of new originals, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans and Hiram Bullock, plus their fiery rhythm section, embarked on an extensive, and hugely successful, tour in 2004. This live double disc set proves how outstanding the band sounded. Unlike situations where too little attention is paid to ensemble interaction, and the emphasis leans too heavily on soloists, the Soul Bop Band has found an effective balance. Brecker, Evans and Bullock sure do solo with authority—but the band also possesses an homogeneous ensemble sound.

This UK-based beat group, consisting of Brian Poole, Alan Blakely, Len 'Chip' Hawkes, Dave Munden and Rick West, formed in 1958 and first entered the UK Top 40 charts at #4 with a version of "Twist and Shout", originally sung by The Beatles in 1963. Later that year, they topped the charts with a cover of The Contours' USA million-seller "Do You Love Me". Before Poole’s departure a few years later, the band did several cover versions of artists including Roy Orbison with “Candy Man” and The Crickets with “Someone Someone” which made it to #2 in the UK Top 40 charts.
