    Label: Marion-Lorraine Records | Tracks: 12 | Rls.date: 2014

2014 album from the singer/songwriter. A celebratory, love-struck album of sublime dream pop, Walk Through Walls was born at a time of profound sadness. In 2011, on the day Herzig was scheduled to launch The Waking Sleep tour, her mother, Cheryl, passed away after several years of battling cancer. For the nine months that followed, Katie toured the world in what she calls 'a difficult, emotional blur.' Then after playing a set at Bonnaroo, Katie found herself standing in the middle of 50,000 people watching Radiohead play their show. ''I was so inspired and so scared, because I suddenly had that old, familiar feeling that I just had to go home and create. But I hadn't written a song since my mom passed away, and I was terrified.'' The result is Walk Through Walls, a collection of 12 songs recorded with co-producer Cason Cooley at their studios in Nashville, TN and mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend) at Blackbird Studios in Nashville.

    Genre: World Music, Vocal, Jazz

Portuguese singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Carmen Souza has one of the most unique and refreshing voices in the current jazz scene. Her unconventional scatting combines traditional jazz techniques with Cape Verdean (her family is of Cape Verdean origin) influences. Carmen Souza’s musical character really stands out. While many female jazz vocalists are recording standards and new material with smooth jazzy arrangements, Carmen’s style is much creative and attractive. She presents a spicy mix of originals and standards where jazz and global sounds come together. Carmen uses jazz as a foundation and adds Cape Verdean traditional music such as batuke, morna, and cola djon; Gypsy jazz; and Brazilian rhythms to her sound.

A member of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2002, Stefan Schulz is one of the world’s leading bass trombonists. This recital programme was recorded live at a concert in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berliner Philharmonie. The programme was chosen to emphasize the various facets of the bass trombone and in particular its ability to play music of a songful character. This certainly applies to Brahms’ Four Serious Songs, as well as the cantabile works by Lebedev and Šulek as well as Jan Sandström’s simple Song to Lotta, appearing as an encore. To balance the programme Schulz has included a work by Daniel Schnyder, the New York-based composer and saxophonist with whom he collaborates closely.

In this remarkable recording, baroque violinist John Holloway creates a programme around the Lachrimae Pavans by John Dowland. Threaded between Dowland's masterpieces are works of other major composers of his era - Henry Purcell, William Lawes, John Jenkins, Thomas Morley and Matthew Locke. In bringing together these pieces of strongly contrasting colour and character Holloway and his musicians give a vivid sense of the great flowering of consort music which took place in England in the 17th century.

    Blues, Contemporary Blues, Acoustic Blues | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 51 min | 121 MB
Label: Burnside Records | Rel: 2008

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter Steve James has carved a niche for himself in the acoustic and folk-blues scene through a lot of touring. He's built his fan base the old-fashioned way, without the support of an international record company marketing machine. Killer acoustic blues and folk, Texas style. Reminiscent of a young Ry Cooder, but Steve's his own man. Soulful singing, strong picking, good tunes. Plays a mean slide guitar and tosses some tasty mandolin as well. It even inspired a new song-cant ask more than that.

The Gene Ammons all-star jam session recordings of the 1950's are all quite enjoyable and this one is no exception. The great tenor is matched with trumpeter Art Farmer, altoist Jackie McLean, guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor for lengthy versions of "Stella By Starlight," the Burrell blues "Funky" and a pair of numbers by arranger Jimmy Mundy. All of the horns plus Burrell and Waldron get ample solo space and Ammons seems to really inspire his sidemen on these soulful bop jams.

Expectations for Sleater-Kinney's fourth album were stratospheric, with the raging, tuneful feminist catharsis of Call the Doctor and Dig Me Out having garnered near-universal critical raves and outlandish media hype. Afraid of falling into a predictable rut, though, the band bravely pushed its range of expression into more personal, subdued, and cerebral territory on The Hot Rock. That means the record isn't quite as immediately satisfying as its two brilliant predecessors, but it does reward those willing to spend time absorbing its nervy introspection and moodiness. Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein push relentlessly for more complex interplay, both in their vocal and instrumental work; even the gentlest songs might break into unexpected dissonance or take an angular, off-kilter melodic direction.
