After WW II, Chicago Bluesmen like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy & Otis Rush, who derived their style from the Mississippi Delta tradition of Charley Patton & Robert Johnson, plugged in their guitars and invented an exciting and powerful format that redefined Blues. When by the mid-sixties most major labels in America had given up on the Blues, white British Blues bands like The Rolling Stones, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall & His Bluesbreakers and later Cream and Led Zeppelin re-exported the Blues back across the Atlantic, but with a very distinct Rock influence. Blues Karloff is all about these musical influences; Black and White, British and American, that shaped the musical tastes of the various band members in their youth.

French chanson trio, singing the songs of 1930s and 40s Paris in their original language, and playing in the style of Django Reinhardt and jazz manouche. Music from the greats - Piaf, Gainbourg, Ulmer, Montand and Trenet, and fiery gypsy melodies. La Mauvaise Réputation - based in Melbourne, Australia - are the premier exponents of Hot Swing and Chanson in the region. They perform the songs of Piaf, Ulmer, Gainsbourg and the like, in the style of legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, and all sung in their original French. Singer and rhythm guitarist Paul Gillet sings the songs of 1930s Paris like they were his own, offering timeless interpretations of tunes often scarred by time, but in his hands, rendered with something of their original flair. An excellent album that thoroughly dismisses any fears that recent personnel upheavals might have damaged Hawkwind in the slightest. Recorded with veteran drummer Ginger Baker as an absolutely astonishing replacement for the departing Simon King and with Huw Lloyd Langton clearly reveling in the guitar hero status accorded by the watching ranks of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Levitation captures Hawkwind at their most confident and brash. Certainly the mighty "Who's Gonna Win the War" has few peers within even the classic lineup's vocabulary, with its drift out of Tim Blake's brief but beautiful "Prelude," a transition to be proud of.

Twelve items from the jaggedy universe of Cabaret Voltaire, here given the '90s facelift treatment as they're stripped down for dancefloor functionality. Sometimes it seems too smoothed out, though there are times when the original edges will suddenly show through. Nor is it quite as annoying as most of the house mix material making the rounds. ~Allmusic

The trip-hop performance moniker of one Jean-Christophe Le Saoût, Wax Tailor first emerged in the French electronica scene in 2004 (with the EP release Lost the Way), but didn't release his debut album until 2006. That debut, Tales of the Forgotten Melodies, was a hit both in France and in the United States, and made quite a dent on the CMJ charts that year. In 2007, Wax Tailor returned to the spotlight with his second full-length, Hope & Sorrow. Featuring vocalist Charlotte Savary and Ursula Rucker, this second album was enough of a success to warrant a number of live shows featuring Wax Tailor and his four-piece band.

Barclay James Harvest was, for many years, one of the most hard luck outfits in progressive rock. A quartet of solid rock musicians John Lees, guitar, vocals; Les Holroyd, bass, vocals; Stuart "Wooly" Wolstenholme, keyboards, vocals; and Mel Pritchard, drums with a knack for writing hook-laden songs built on pretty melodies, they harmonized like the Beatles and wrote extended songs with more of a beat than the Moody Blues. They were signed to EMI at the same time as Pink Floyd, and both bands moved over to the company's progressive rock-oriented Harvest imprint at the same time, yet somehow, they never managed to connect with the public for a major hit in England, much less America.
