The talented swing singer Daryl Sherman and vibraphonist John Cocuzzi pay tribute to Mildred Bailey and Red Norvo on this very enjoyable CD. Sherman does a superlative job of emulating "The Rockin' Chair Lady" without needing to change her own basic approach much on some of Bailey's greatest hits, plus a few obscurities. "Georgia on My Mind" and "Rockin' Chair" are effectively combined in a medley, the spirit of Bailey's saucy rendition of "Squeeze Me" is re-created, "It's So Peaceful in the Country" is wistful, and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" really swings. Cocuzzi (whose sound is somewhere between Norvo and Lionel Hampton) takes some fine solos…

Jumaane Smith, trumpeter and vocalist, has already done what most musicians spend their lives dreaming about. He’s traveled the world, played stages in historic clubs, in massive stadiums and at cultural landmarks, recorded a solo album, appeared on national television and performed for two sitting U.S. presidents. His collaborations range from pop idols to jazz legends, and the list reads like a lineup for the best New Orleans Jazz Fest ever. He’s worked with Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Michael Buble’, Jackie Evancho, Alicia Keys, The Jonas Brothers, Wyclef Jean, Justin Bieber, Diddy, Natalie Cole, James Ingram, Wynton Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane, Chris Botti and many more…

Although "Spirits" is only his third solo release, bassist Erik Scott has had a lifelong career in music that began in the late 1960’s, mostly in rock bands. Now in his own later 60’s, Scott has reinvented himself as an instrumentalist - and a very impressive one at that! Some of the material on "Spirits" was previously released, but Scott is now embarking on the arduous task of getting his original music more widely heard. Once that starts to happen, I can almost guarantee that Erik Scott will be climbing to the top of the charts on a regular basis (pun sort of intended!).

The film received its world premiere at South by Southwest earlier this year.

One of the founding artists of the new age piano genre, David Lanz, and the ultra-gifted vocalist Kristin Amarie, collaborate on a welcome addition to the holiday music canon, Forever Christmas. The duo are joined on the album by some talented guest stars: Eric Tingstad (guitar), Nancy Rumbel (woodwinds), Walter Gray (cello), Gary Lanz (guitar), Keith Lowe (bass), and Alonzo Davideo (guitar), although piano clearly dominates the recording. Eleven of the album's fourteen tracks are originals–unusual for a Christmas album but also a welcome change from the norm in this genre.

In November 2013 Lang Lang returned to London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall for two recitals that sold out within 48 hours of tickets being released. This 120 minute film captures the complete recital and offers an opportunity to re-live an unforgettable concert experience. He finished a celebrated two-part program consisting of Mozart and Chopin with no less than eight encores, breaking Evgeny Kissin's record of encores at the RAH. The three early Mozart Piano Sonatas have been part of Lang Lang's latest recital which he presented live in more than 200 concerts worldwide - the recordings that were captured at his RAH concert are also part of the new Mozart album.

Johann Gottlieb Graun became a member of the small court orchestra of the Prussian Crown Prince Frederick in Ruppin in 1732, which Carl Heinrich also joined in 1735. With Friedrich's ascension to the throne in 1740, Johann Gottlieb was appointed concertmaster and Carl Heinrich kapellmeister of the royal court. Johann Gottlieb remained until the end of his life closely linked to Frederick the Great, as concertmaster and chamber musician. Whilst his brother Carl Heinrich became an important figure at the new Berlin Court Opera, Johann Gottlieb strongly influenced the musical life of Berlin and early classicism in general as a violinist and composer.

When Screeching Weasel broke up the first time in 1989, bassist Dan Schater and drummer Brian Vermin hooked up with three friends and started the new band. Sludgeworth has gotta be one of the most underappreciated and underacknowledged bands to ever come out of the Chicago music scene. Part of it was timing, part of it was the fact that they never hooked up with a decent record label and part of it was the band's differences over musical direction - differences that eventually split the band up.

Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony was the first symphony Christian Lindberg ever heard, at the age of ten. Nine years later it was the first he performed as a professional musician – in the brass section of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Having embarked on a successful conducting career, the trombonist-turned-international-soloist has since had the opportunity also to conduct the work, most memorably at the Mariinskij Theatre in St Petersburg, the city where the composer himself gave the first performance in 1888. With his Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra, based in the Norwegian city of Bodø well north of the Arctic Circle, Lindberg has now recorded this symphony, which has become one of the composer's best-loved works.

Hoelscher demonstrates a formidable mastery of Spohr’s technically challenging passagework, although his efforts are somewhat undermined by the recessed sound of the orchestra. (…) Nonetheless, it is fascinating to experience a bird’s-eye view of Spohr’s development, from the elegant if somewhat four-square First Concerto to the more sophisticated harmonic and formal structures of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth.

First released in 1989, Doolittle was the second Pixies album, first to be made commercially available in the US. An instant hit with both critics and fans, its slow burn success has since helped it to sell close to a million copies in the US alone. The 3 CD version contains an impressive 50 tracks - the original album, 2 full Peel Sessions, 6 B-sides and 22 demos - of which, almost half have never been commercially released before.

Peter Green tentatively returned to performing and recording in 1996, and The Peter Green Splinter Group is the first fruits of that comeback. The very fact that Green is performing again is encouraging, but the album sadly falls short of high expectations. A collection of blues covers, the record is filled with standards like "Going Down" and "Dark End of the Street," delivered professionally and without much flair. Green himself plays competently, but there are only a handful of times where his playing is unexpected and inspired. That might seem like a disappointment, but it's reassuring to have any flashes of brilliance, and they suggest that he could record a full-fledged return to form if given some time. ~Allmusic

Deciding to scale back the overly pretty sound on Blue Bell Knoll while experimenting with more accessibility – the Twins ended up creating their best album since Treasure. From the start, Heaven… is simply fantastic: on "Cherry-Coloured Funk," Guthrie's inimitable guitar work chimes leading a low-key but forceful rhythm, while Raymonde's grand bass work fleshes it out. Fraser simply captivates; her vocals are the clearest, most direct they've ever been, purring with energy and life.

Improvisations with Han Bennink and Derek Bailey in 1970. The monumental first release on the Incus label formed by Parker, Bailey and Tony Oxley, augmented here by nine minutes of material from the same session. The Topography of the Lungs is finally re-issued. Considered by many to be a key recording in the history of improvised music, it brought together three musicians who then continued to develop the genre in the intervening three decades: EVAN PARKER (soprano & tenor saxophones), DEREK BAILEY (guitar) and HAN BENNINK (percussion, etc). Reissue of LP 1 plus over 9 minutes of extra material from the same 1970 session.
