    Label:Haenssler - Date:2012

Walter Braunfels was one of those all-too-ubiquitous figures in the German musical world of the 1920s and early '30s, who – through no fault of his, and even less of his music – managed to go from the center of the musical world to near-complete-obscurity as a composer. And that obscurity lingered for decades after his death in 1954, until the end of the twentieth century, when he was belatedly rediscovered

Sweet have never gotten the respect they deserve – that's what happens when your specialty is good times. Ben Edmonds perfectly explains the error of this disrespect in his liner notes to Shout! Factory's wonderful Action: The Sweet Anthology, but even he dismisses the group's earliest bubblegum singles, and their inclusion is a big reason why Action stands apart from all previous Sweet compilations. Most Sweet compilations – and there are many, their discography cluttered with dynamite doses of the hits and cheap recyclings alike – stick to the basic canon, beginning with the stomping "Little Willy," running through "Ballroom Blitz," and ending with "Love Is Like Oxygen," their first and last big hit not written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, with a handful spotlighting that early bubblegum.

The first King Ayisoba album with full band, creating a total new high energy powerful sound with traditional acoustic instruments. This is the traditional music from the future. King Ayisoba is a 21st century songwriter, singing in English, Frafra and Twi, playing all over the world, living in megapolis Accra but never forgetting his Northern Ghanaian roots.

There is no denying UFO was not the hard rocking force it was just a few years before this release, but Mechanix is still a terrific album. No doubt Mechanix is more commercial and on the lighter side of rock, so what! it still rocks and it's still top quality music! The song "Doing It All For You" alone is worth the price of admission (has anyone heard the amazing live version on the hard-to-find Headstone CD?) Let me put this straight: UFO ruled the world when Schenker was in, but UFO also produced some of the best rock albums when Paul Chapman was the axeman.

The magic that occurs when student meets teacher on equal footing years down the road is rare enough. With Jim Hall—one of the most influential guitarists of the past half century—his spare approach, a reference point for younger guitar icons including John Abercrombie, John Scofield and Pat Metheny, has resulted in more magic than most. Hall and Metheny met successfully on Jim Hall & Pat Metheny (Telarc, 1999) and, while the elder guitarist also met briefly with Bill Frisell on a handful of tracks on Dialogues (Telarc, 1995), it was clear that the simpatico between them was profound and warranted further investigation. 13 years later—Frisell's star rising considerably during that time—the two reconvene for Hemispheres, a double-disc set with one disc of duo material and the other in quartet with bassist Scott Colley and Joey Baron, where their empathic relationship is finally and fully realized…

Other than four songs apiece released by Onyx and Verve, the CD reissue of Easy Like, Vol. 1 has guitarist Barney Kessel's first sessions as a leader, performances which launched his longtime association with the Contemporary label. Augmented by two "new" alternate takes, the set features Kessel in boppish form with quintets in 1953 and 1956 featuring, either Bud Shank or Buddy Collette doubling on flute and alto. Kessel shows off the influence of Charlie Christian throughout the performances, with the highlights including "Easy Like," "Lullaby of Birdland," "North of the Border," and the accurately titled "Salute to Charlie Christian."

Koen Holtkamp creates music that exists simultaneously in large and small scales. His compositions lend themselves to careful examination, with each sound precisely placed. Holtkamp (who is one-half of Mountains) considers every instrument he uses carefully and pays specific attention to the environment, actual or digital, in which that instrument is being recorded and processed. They also expand and evolve gradually, giving a sense of boundlessness that extends not only to a specific song or album, but also to his discography as a whole.

Recorded at 4 August 2004 at Arena di Verona Italy. The magic of our Arena has become even more enchanting. A sublime embrace symbolising art and great music has tied it to seven millenary amphitheatres around the Mediterranean: Pula in Croatia, Ephesus in Turkey, Palmyra in Syria, Leptis Magna in Libya, El Djem in Tunisia, Terragona in Spain and Arles in France. This is an unprecedented event that also has the merit of bringing Placido Domingo back to the splendid setting of the Arena di Verona after a ten year hiatus. This great tenor acts as the spokeman - using his matchless voice as an instrument - to bring a message of brotherhood among nations and dialogue among different cultures.
