Rapoon is the ethno-ambient solo project of Zoviet France co-founder Robin Storey, operating out of the United Kingdom since 1992. Robin was born in 1955 in Cumbria, England. While studying fine arts at Sunderland University, he began pursuing a long-held interest in sound manipulation by taking classes in electronic and experimental composition, additionally joining with friends to perform the works of Karlheinz Stockhausen (a key influence, as were the krautrock bands of the early 1970s). In 1979 Storey formed the pioneering industrial group Zoviet France, remaining a member until 1993; the year previous, Storey issued the first Rapoon album, Dream Circle, its entrancing fusion of Indian ragas, African rhythms…

Devotees of superior jazz vocalists have several reasons to rejoice about this fourth CD by the highly respected San Francisco-based Paula West. First and foremost, the recording is simply a true knockout; but the rejoicing is also because, despite rave audiences and reviews for over a decade, this is West's first release since the impressively executed Come What May (High Horse) in 2001. Recorded during an engagement at New York City's Jazz Standard in 2011, it features stellar but recently departed pianist/arranger George Mesterhazy's quartet (including guitarist Ed Cherry), the excellent band with which she has long collaborated. Axel Rudi Pell has been through it all, the rise of heavy metal in Germany during the mid 80s, it's fall from grace in the early 90s, and it's rather rapid and powerful rebirth in the late 90s. Vyacheslav Petrovich Artyomov is a Russian and Soviet composer. Artyomov's compositions show his interest in the archaic ("Incantations", "Totem") and Christian motifs ("Requiem", "Ave, Maria") as well as Eastern meditation ("Awakening", "A Symphony of Elegies", "Moonlight Dreams"). As a young composer, he developed a profound interest, successively, in Russian folklore, traditional music of the East, works of Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Messiaen, …..

Vissarion Shebalin finished his basic schooling at the Omsk gymnasium. In 1920, he simultaneously enrolled in two very different schools: the local Institute of Agriculture and a provincial music college. By 1923, however, music had prevailed, and Shebalin entered Nikolay Myaskovsky's composition class at the Moscow Conservatory. Shebalin's student compositions, mainly chamber works, were favorably received, though some critics drew attention to "the strong influence of the French impressionists," adding that "this stylization was deliberately introduced by the composer, but it is not always sufficiently sustained."…..
