Jennifer Kloetzel, cello, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose, conductor

The image of a deer skull superimposed over a rocky landscape is at once serene and startling, and Ruehr’s (b. 1963) music reflects both. Its broad orchestral shades, sweeping string writing, and arching motives, put across with clarity by solo trumpet, brings to mind classic film music and the rural Americana of Copland’s popular scores. Yet these elements grind against one another for patches of rough dissonance. The music also seems to spin in many directions at once. Brass and woodwind calls dart out from the music’s bubbling rhythm, while doubled octaves in basses and piano ground the music to the earth.

Heavy Metal | Label : Killer Metal Records

Lords Of The Trident are doing for heavy metal what Gloryhammer do for power metal: play cheesy music in costumes with axes and make it completely serious and awesome. At least an unusual band with an attitude that might refer to comics, or a Gwar version meets the beauties of Lordi and add some fantasy atmosphere to get the job done. Sometimes I wonder why they have a kind of despise as the music of LOTT is much more mature and professional compared with the outfits of the members and the charisma in general. They transfer their songs into a fantasy world where knights and dungeons were daily topics, while the enchanted forest unleashed dragons and myths. It’s like a good song is transposed to a gimmick world and that’s totally unnecessary.

This record has a very German sound: it is almost progressive hard rock. It consists in cold & melancholic high electric guitars notes and in a mix of vintage and some more "modern" keyboards. If it is classified as progressive rock, then it is a very basic, simple and straightforward one. The songs have a unique sound, and the compositions are not bad at all, although they are not outstanding. The very punchy bass is rather pleasant and elaborated, and the drums are surprisingly varied and elaborated, despite they are not very fast.

"Günter Pauler created a breathtaking backing sound that the listener will be speechless about. Pauler had a little help of musician like, Chris Jones: Guitars, Harmony vocal, Hans-Jorg Maucksch: Electric Bass, Frank Fiedler: Acoustic bass, Beo Brockhausen: Hurdy-Gurdy, Jew's-harp, John Hickman: Banjo, Byron Berline: Fiddle, Steve Baker: Harp and Hrolfur Vagnsson: Accordion. Already on the first track, Mississippi Rain, you will hear the sound of the typical Munyon fret-less bass guitar and an acoustic guitar solo of the master himself. The power on this album you will find in, Slim Possibilities."

"The Trio Parnassus has maintained a reputation as one of the finest piano trios in Germany from the latter-twentieth and early-twenty first centuries despite a fair number of personnel changes. The ensemble has developed a reputation for straddling two rather distinctive worlds in its repertory choices: while it plays standards from the Classical and Romantic periods, as well as many twentieth century and contemporary works, it has also devoted much time to the rediscovery of forgotten compositions by nineteenth century composers like Woldemar Bargiel, Joseph Rheinberger, Philipp Scharwenka, and several others…" ~allmusic

Pianist, composer, and producer Jim Brickman isn't about ruffling feathers, and his subtle, gentle, and melodic playing has an undeniable grace that isn't going to set off any nerves. His frequent collaborations with other artists in various pop and country genres lift his work out from under the new age umbrella a little, and that's what's collected here. Featured are songs with Lady Antebellum ("Never Alone"), Richie McDonald ("Coming Home for Christmas"), the last-known recording of Gerald Levert ("My Angel"), Sara Evans ("Never Alone"), Tom Douglas ("Love of My Life"), Marc Antoine ("Escape"), and Jake Simpson ("To Hear You Say You Love Me").

Joining the likes of Winterhawk, Amulet, and Truth and Janey in the role of obscure Midwestern hard rock bands to have their '70s recordings belatedly reissued by Monster Records was seemingly not enough to satisfy Kansas City's JPT Scare Band, who proceeded to launch their own imprint in the wake of 2000's favorably received Sleeping Sickness CD in an attempt to expose any newfound fans to even more of their music, both old and new. The oddly named Kung Bomar was that imprint, and 2002's Past Is Prologue its first product, which amazingly revealed that the core trio of vocalist/guitarist Terry Swope, bassist Paul Grigsby, and drummer Jeff Littrell, had in fact carried on with their basement jam sessions for nigh on 30 years, in spite of the general public's complete ignorance of heir existence.

Lucrezia Borgia is a melodramma, or opera, in a prologue and two acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Felice Romani wrote the Italian libretto after the play by Victor Hugo, in its turn after the legend of Lucrezia Borgia. Lucrezia Borgia was first performed on 26 December 1833 at La Scala, Milan with Lelande and Pedrazzi. While not performed as regularly as Donizetti's more popular operas, Lucrezia's aria "Com'è bello", Orsino's Brindisi "Il segreto per esser felice", the tenor's "Di pescator ignobile", and the bass aria "Vieni, la mia vendetta!" are all very effective and famous melodic moments from the opera and have been performed and recorded frequently.

Sid Rumpo was a fairly polished pub-rock band which formed in Perth in 1971 and unfortunately disappeared into the mists of time in 1974. They are probably best remembered as one of a long line of Mick Elliot's bands. Mick is an accomplished blues-rock guitarist that has been around the Aussie blues & rock scene forever (in bands like Levi Smiths Clefs, Jim Keays' Southern Cross, They Accidentally Sued Themselves and Western Flyer), but rarely seemed to stay in a band long enough to record more than one album.

Atoll is one of the most renowned bands that came from France and is also the only French band that had an English vocalist in its lineup (see above). Atoll released five studio albums in all, and "Rock Puzzle" is their fourth. As far as I can remember, this is their only album that features a symphonic orchestra.
