Dennis Brown's endearing trio of albums for A&M – Four Play, Love Has Found Its Way and The Prophet Rides Again – nicely anthologized on this great 2CD set! By the time the 80s came around, Dennis was, deservedly, a huge star in both Jamaica and the UK, but hadn't reached that level of fame in the US. It couldn't have made more sense for a major label in the States to sweep in and try to change that situation – and if the fame didn't quite come on our side of the pond, it wasn't for a lack of great music. The Professionals lay down the instrumentation and each of the 3 A&M records feature excellent production by Joe Gibbs, along with Willie Lindo, Dennis Brown and Errol Thompson. Titles include "On The Rocks", "I Need Your Love", "Come On Baby", "The Existence Of Jah", "The Cheapter", "Your Man", "Love Has Found Its Way", "Get High On Your Love", "Blood, Sweat And Tears", "Any Day Now", "Why Baby Why", "Get Up", "Out Of The Funk", "Jammin' My Way To Fame", "Too Hot", "The Prophet Rides Again", "Historical Places (Ethiopia)", "This Love Of Mine", "Storms Are Raging".

Recorded in 1973 but only released the following year, "Desert Places" displays a wild mix of styles and influences, ranging from Jethro Tull (title track Desert Places) to Deep Purple, with a light sprinkling of krautrock "motorik". The musicianship however is never less than highly competent, making this record a highly prized prog rarity. Satin Whale's Desert Places was a fantastic heavy-prog effort, performing a mix of blues, hard rock and slight jazz, tempered by a stunning guitar, killer swirling organ and hard driven bass and drum. All the tracks are extremely energetic and well played. "Seasons of life and Remember" are the highlights of the album. HEAVY KRAUT PROG KILLER !! Fantastic Album !!

"…In many ways Dupré may be viewed as a 'Paganini' of the organ - being a virtuoso of the highest order, he contributed extensively to the development of technique (both in his organ music and in his pedagogical works) although, like Paganini, his music is relatively unknown to musicians other than those who play the instrument for which the music was written. A fair and objective critique of his music should take into account the fact that, occasionally, the emphasis on virtuosity and technique can be detrimental to the musical content and substance. However, his more successful works combine this virtuosity with a high degree of musical integrity, qualities found in works such as the Symphonie-Passion, the Chemin de la Croix, the Preludes and Fugues, the Esquisses and Évocation, and the Cortège et Litanie…" ~wikipedia

Rock / Emo Rock / Post Hardcore

Every genre under the sun eventually circles around on itself, ready and willing to eat its own tail, ouroboros-style. So, it should be little surprise that the ’90s strain of emo that had its nucleus in the Midwest is being re-injected into the world's main vein in a crystallized form. Which is all just a nice way of saying that the sound of Crash Of Rhinos' second LP will be very familiar to any readers who came of age studying the early editions of the Emo Diaries compilation series.

This album is just chock full of great piano, nice laid back vocals, organ, acoustic guitars, violins, mellotron, and solid bass and drums. The remastered mini that I have has decent sound (for 1972) and a nice gatefold with strange artwork. As with PFM the musicianship is very high, the arrangements are handled with great care and there is a nice balance between rock sections and more mellow, contemplative sections. I have read that the lyrics on both of their albums are quite good, though of course I have no way to confirm this personally. The music has a romantic and somewhat wistful sound throughout.
