Alfredo Catalani is best known today for his opera La Wally, but he also experimented with a number of orchestral works, including three symphonies. Ero e Leandro, Catalani’s last orchestral work, evokes the dramatic tragedy of the Greek mythological lovers Hero and Leander who lived on either side of the Hellespont (the modern Dardanelles). The brief Scherzo is a sparkling piece while the Andantino is noteworthy for its fluid melodic line. The bel canto lyricism of Contemplazione contrasts with Il Mattino, a single-movement Romantic symphony divided into several clearly distinguishable sections.

“Shake Your Soul” is an outstanding effort by a band that should have been at the top of its class. The band originally formed in Louisiana as Voices in 1986 and consisted of Kelly Keeling (guitar and keyboard), Lance Bulen (vocals), Keith Harrison (bass) and Harold Knappenburger (drums). They changed their name to Cheetah, later to Meridian and finally Baton Rouge, the group relocated to Los Angeles in 1987 and revamped their line up. Their debut album, “Shake Your Soul” debuted in 1990, reaching only the 160th place on the Billboard charts at a time when media attention to the style had already begun to decline dramatically.

Kanseil is a Folk Metal project begun in late 2010 in Fregona, Veneto, Italy. It's named after the ancient name of Cansiglio, its home-place's mountains, that are often told about in its songs. The band assembles early medieval melodies and traditional folk sounds from all over Europe, with death and black metal riffs, along with acoustic assembles in an ancient-fashioned atmosphere.

Layers of sequencing give this music a very Klaus Schulze edge. As the CD continues, Boots' own style seeps through, taking control of the music with delicate melodies and a soft percussive presence. Although these compositions are quite complex, the overall effect of the music is one of thick drone.
