Trombonist J.J. Johnson's 1960 sextet is featured on this Columbia CD. Most notable among the sidemen is a rather young trumpeter named Freddie Hubbard on one of his first sessions; also helping out are tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Arthur Harper and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Seven of the compositions (which are joined by Dizzy Gillespie's "Blue 'N' Boogie") are Johnson's and, although none caught on, "Mohawk," "In Walked Horace" and "Fatback" (which is heard in two versions) are all fairly memorable.

Very 'eavy… Very 'umble is the debut album of British hard rock band Uriah Heep.

Star Time is a 1991 71-track, 4-CD box set by James Brown. Its contents span most of the length of his career up to the time of its release, starting in 1956 with his first hit record, "Please, Please, Please", and ending with "Unity, Pt. 1", his 1984 collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa. It includes a few previously unreleased tracks.

German melodic metallers EDGUY will release their new album, "Age Of The Joker", in Europe on August 29 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Peppermint Park studio (SCORPIONS, PHIL COLLINS) in Hannover, which was previously described by the group as "a recording temple with a tremendously great-sounding room."

Violinist Joe Venuti's three recordings with tenorman Zoot Sims are all quite joyful and exciting. This Chiaroscuro recording matches the pair with pianist John Bunch, bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Bobby Rosengarden and, on "Don't Take Your Love from Me," trombonist Spiegel Willcox who was then 73. The small-group swing performances have plenty of life and more often than not are hard-swinging. ~ AllMusic

Chicago Blues: A Living History is a tribute to the past, present and future of the Chicago Blues. It pays homage to its creators, its rich history, its current practitioners, and its singular place in the (r)evolution of 20th century American music. This is not an anthology or a compilation of what came before. With this CD, history is being made at the same time it is being presented. It is not a retro recording, rather it is intended to be the opposite. This recording, on two discs, allows the listener to hear the evolution of the Chicago Blues sound in chronological order from the 1940s to the present as interpreted by four Chicago bluesmen that have inherited this tradition. Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch and Lurrie Bell are the bridge between the originators of the genre and the Chicago Blues of today–each of them has a foot in a generation of Chicago Blues history right up to present day; through them the Chicago Blues remains a living tradition.
