The Hollies are an English rock group known for their pioneering and distinctive three part vocal harmony style. The Hollies became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s (231 weeks on the UK singles charts during the 1960s; the 9th highest of any artist of the decade) and into the mid 1970s. They are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and continue to record and perform. In recognition of their achievements, the Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Without a nerve, the Music arrived in America shortly after the Vines hype of 2002 had simmered down. But unlike their Aussie chart mates, the four boys from Leeds waltzed in with raw confidence. It was about the music, pure and simple. Their name made it obvious and their infectious, brash sound proved it tenfold. the Music, whose members are on the cusp of their twenties, constructed material that's not only aware of what the band is like sonically, but also keenly resistant of current post-grunge flair. The bombast of '60s psychedelia weaved around glazed techno bits give a vibrant overtone to the album itself and the flurry of manic musical bliss is almost immediate. While still engaged on the vast canvas of the Sixth Symphony, commenced in 1919 but not completed until 1923, Myaskovsky began work on his Seventh Symphony which he nished in 1922. In many respects the symphonies are interwoven and represent very different fruits stemming from the same creative act.

As James MacMillan celebrates his 50th birthday he here conducts his large-scale, complex work, The Quickening coupled with the symphonic suite The Sacrifice: Three Interludes, taken from his opera, The Sacrifice, a work based on a medieval Welsh tale and focusing on issues of love and conflict. Co-commissioned by the BBC Proms and the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Quickening sets poetry by MacMillan’s frequent collaborator Michael Symmons Roberts. Hailed as some of the most distinguished writing since that of Benjamin Britten, the powerfully imaginative score explores the themes of birth, new life and new impulses, but as MacMillan says, it also has its dark side out of which hope is glimpsed. Joining the BBC Philharmonic is the Hilliard Ensemble, who premiered the work at the BBC Proms, accompanied by the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and Youth Chorus.

Sonja and Shanti Sungkono hail from Jakarta by way of Germany. The 20th Century Piano Duets Collection is their second release for New Classical Adventure. Most of this repertoire is fairly standard stuff for piano duo. Although Colin McPhee's once obscure Balinese Ceremonial Music is gaining ground in the central literature and Raimo Kangro's much later music probably belongs there, the proof here is in the playing, rather than in the pudding or any other factor one might consider. The Sungkonos' Bartók is especially dynamic and engaging, but the whole disc is bursting with enthusiasm and energy from the wild thrill ride that is Kangro's Klimper Op. 20/4 all the way to their dazzling and urgent realization of Danses Andalouses of Manuel Infante.

The repertoire on this CD is written across a period of more than forty-five years, from the year Britten entered the Royal College of Music at the age of sixteen, to the very last year of his life. The works are performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and they are conducted by Edward Gardner, whose Britten release in March 2011 (CHAN10658) was made Disc of the Month in the April issue of BBC Music.
