Excellent album, two geniuses of the guitar, a highly recommended gem.

This is a remarkable record by the Howard Alden-Dan Barrett Quintet. Although the group has an instrumentation of guitarist Alden, trombonist Barrett, Chuck Wilson on alto and clarinet, bassist Frank Tate, and drummer Jackie Williams, its arrangements (some by Buck Clayton) often make the band sound a bit like the John Kirby Sextet, a classic unit comprised of trumpet, alto, clarinet, piano, bass, and drums. The delightful unit uplifts such tunes as "Lullaby in Rhythm," "I May Be Wrong," Charlie Shavers' "Dawn on the Desert," "Stompin' at the Savoy," and even Thelonious Monk's "Pannonica," revitalizing small-group swing. Highly recommended.

Elements of the Infinite is the third album you want all promising young bands to write. Allegaeon’s 2010 debut Fragments of Form and Function put them on the map as a potentially interesting band on which to keep an eye. Formshifter followed in that vein in 2012, an improvement to the still very much work-in-progress formula. With Elements of the Infinite, it feels like Allegaeon have finally arrived, and “Threshold of Perception” — the album’s opening track — is the perfect microcosm of everything there is to love about it: expertly crafted arrangements, orchestrations composed by guitarist Greg Burgess and Joe Ferris (among a whole bevy of neo-classical elements), RIFFS, epic guitar solos and hooks.

This two-disc set includes "Morphonie" for orchestra with solo string quartet (1972 – 40'10) and "Klangbeschreibung I-III" (1987 – 87'10). Both were premiered by the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg at the Donaueschinger Musiktage: "Morphonie" in 1974 and "Klangbeschreibung" in 1987.
