Guitarist Gerry Beaudoin makes a strong impression with this CD of easygoing swing with a few twists added. No slouch as a soloist, he also is happy to share the solo spotlight. The title track is a delightful foot-tapping original blues, with the leader trading licks with veteran guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and clarinetist Billy Novick. Check out the very upbeat version of "St. Thomas," featuring matchless mandolin master David Grisman and sensitive percussion by Grover Mooney. Grisman nearly steals the show on "All Blues," but Beaudoin gets in some choice licks, too. Also worth hearing is the unusual version of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."

After the successful premiere of Myaskovsky's Sixth Symphony, performed on May 4th, 1924 by Nikolai Golovanov & the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and Chorus, critics and the audience had essentially two types of reactions toward this ultimately moving score. On the one hand, many deemed the work as the end of the musical era developed & cherished by among Russia's foremost composers: Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Rubinstein, the Russian Five (Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, & Cui) and, Tchaikovsky. And that tradition was carried on by the likes of Glazunov, Tanayev, Lyadov, Arensky. However, by the time Myaskovsky composed the Sixth, many of the composers either passed-on, emigrated, or stopped writing prolifically, especially in symphonic genres.

While quite a few arena rock acts of the '70s found the transformation into the '80s quite difficult, several acts continued to flourish and enjoyed some of their biggest commercial success: Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and especially Foreigner. Foreigner's leader from the beginning has been British guitarist Mick Jones, who first broke into the music biz as a "hired gun" of sorts, appearing on recordings by George Harrison and Peter Frampton, and as part of a later-day version of hard rockers Spooky Tooth.
