    Indie Pop, Female Vocal | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 00:50:24 | 115 MB
Label: Partisan Records | Release Year: 2014

Specializing in a heady mix of polyrhythmic, psych-tinged art-rock and sugary, soulful indie pop, colorful Wisconsin-based pop sextet PHOX was formed in 2011 in the city of Baraboo (an hour south of Madison) around the talents of longtime friends Monica Martin, Matt Holmen, J. Sean Krunnfusz, Dave Roberts, Matteo Roberts, and Zach Johnston, all of whom met in high school. The band, who describe their unique, cosmopolitan sound as falling somewhere between "Feist and Monty Python," became a much buzzed about fixture in the Midwest before inking a deal with the respected, Brooklyn-based indie label Partisan Records, who would go on to issue the group's eponymous 2014 debut long-player.

The first thing that must be said about this album is that, despite of the release date, it is a collection of previously unreleased songs by the very first line-up of the band, which didn't include the wonderful voice of Francesco Di Giacomo. The lyrics are quite simple and so it's better to point the attention to the music that, although far from the complex textures of the first period albums, is very fine and includes some themes that had been developed in the following albums (the last notes of "E io Canto" are the main theme of "Non mi rompete" in "Io sono nato libero", the music of "E luce fu" later became the one of "Quando la buona gente dice" from "Come in un'ultima cena"). The title track is an extremely mature instrumental jazzy work, which can remember, for the structure and the execution, a little gem by Sting "The dream of the blue turtle".

The third album by solo pianist Theo Bishop adds some fairly subtle electronics (both purely atmospheric, and on tracks like "Tall Ships" and the really quite lovely "Water Dance," mimicking the sound of acoustic instruments) to his sound, simultaneously enriching his tonal palette but also taking him several steps closer to generic new age pabulum. However, Bishop's take on solo instrumental music doesn't skimp on the melodic content, which means that most of these 12 tracks, despite the fairly anonymous arrangements, are more memorable than most of what's produced in this genre.

Our favorite 'Dorothy' is one of the few singers you can 'feel'. This collection features Stephanie's best songs from her classic Cassablanca Records era, and most were produced by the talented team of James Mtume & Reggie Lucas. This CD inlcudes a few rare 12" extended mixes, and rare songs from her classic 'What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin ?' album are here. It's about time for Stephanie's older albums to be released on CD, and here's an idea for serious fans….Obtain mint vinyl copies of 'What Cha Gonna Do…'(1979) & 'Sweet Sensation'(1980) and have someone transfer BOTH rare albums onto a single CD.

SBE play classic stoner rock, with a strong sixties/seventies psychedelic vibe, that is a positive joy to hear looping out of your speakers and filling the room. Somehow SBE seem to make a well worn genre seem fresh and powerful. There is nothing particularly new here, but who cares? It sounds fucking great. If these two tracks are anything to go by then SBE cook like a manic depressive master chef on crystal meth.

The program also includes footage from a live performance by the band in Boston.
Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason, too. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion-model looks and glamorous sense of style.
