An excellent cd of a great jazz guitarist with much swing, recommended!

The title says it all: Although not steeped in heavy metal riffs or gothic sound effects, this 1976 effort from Grand Funk Railroad creates a mood gloomy enough to rival the darkest moments of Black Sabbath…

From south to west, swing is our quest. Red Skunk Southwest: A Title of Two Cities. Although the band was first founded on the west coast in California, a few of the band's members have since branched out to the southern? "boot" of the country, New Orleans, LA. We are fortunate that Jazz festivals and other events allow the band to reassemble and play together every couple of months. The album name, "Red Skunk Southwest" not only reflects where the members of the band travel from, but also the name of the airline by which they travel.

Live-Evil is one of Miles Davis' most confusing and illuminating documents. As a double album, it features very different settings of his band – and indeed two very different bands. The double-LP CD package is an amalgam of a December 19, 1970, gig at the Cellar Door, which featured a band comprised of Miles, bassist Michael Henderson, drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist John McLaughlin, saxophonist Gary Bartz, Keith Jarrett on organ, and percussionist Airto. These tunes show a septet that grooved hard and fast, touching on the great funkiness that would come on later.

This is three-CD compilation released by Mellow Records as a King Crimson tribute. Among the performers are some of the most prominent contemporary progressive bands, with a wide variety ranging from the old-fashioned spaghetti-prog of Germinale or Malibran to the jazzcore ardour of Anatrofobia and Caboto. Some of the cover versions are quite calligraphic while others reshape the compositions more deeply (Nema Niko and Comfort bring in some electronica, Mariposa show their chamber-punk attitude - and their awful English pronounciation, Mosaic Orchestra almost have a fanfare sound), but they're all substantially faithful and well-played, with many great renditions and a very good overall result.

Following the success of "Ni Vent… Ni Nouvelle", Maneige records another studio album featuring a similar style of fusion, 1978's "Libre service - Self-service". What results is a logical follow-up to the previous release’s amalgamation of fusion, funk and progressive that characterizes this era in the band's history. This CD reissue contains the 10 original tracks which have been recently remastered, plus bonus live material culled from this same era (featured on the 1979 album “Composite”), as well as a 12-page booklet full of photos.

In the modern hard rock and metal scene there is a new trend to hearken back to the days of yore and take the stylings of the psychedelic bands from the late 60's/early 70's. 3 Speed Automatic is no exception. Laden with enough heavy blues influenced power trio sound to even turn the ear of the most die hard fans of Cream, Blue Cheer and the other gods of the hippie rock past as well.

Along with Lucifer's Friend, Blackwater Park, and other bands even more obscure, Epitaph were members of a curious fraternity of '70s German bands that featured British singers. Founded in Dortmund in late 1969 by vocalist/guitarist Cliff Jackson and his compatriot James McGillivray, plus locally bred bassist Bernd Kolbe, … Epitaph finally re-emerged with 1979's Return to Reality album. Now pursuing a semi-heavy metal angle, this edition of Epitaph recorded two more, poorly received LPs …

Not the first but definitely the most popular rock instrumental combo, the Ventures scored several hit singles during the 1960s – most notably "Walk-Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" – but made their name in the growing album market, covering hits of the day and organizing thematically linked LPs…
