During the 1930s, Ruslanova became extremely popular. She became an artist of the state association of musical, variety and circus enterprises in 1933, and performed all over Russia throughout the rest of the decade. When World War II broke out, she ceaselessly toured from one front to another, helping to boost the soldiers' courage with her patriotic songs. Her signature songs were Valenki and Katyusha, written specially for her. After the Battle of Berlin, she performed on the doorsteps of the smouldering Reichstag.

Fritz Reiner was one of the foremost conductors of his time. Crowning his long career in Europe and America was the decade from 1954 to 1963 as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra an illustrious partnership that ranks along such other historical tenures as Karajan's in Berlin, Szell's in Cleveland and Bernstein's in New York.
Luckily for posterity, Reiner's legendary interpretations at the helm of the Chicago Symphony which no less than Igor Stravinsky called "the most precise and flexible orchestra in the world" were captured on record by RCA Victor. Now for the first time ever, they are being issued together in a single Sony Classical box set of 63 re-mastered CDs.

The forward-thinking electronic outfit Sunkings has moved from recording intelligent techno for GPR to psychedelic trance for Blue Room Released, a leap made by few in either scenes. The group began in 1990, as the trio of Jay Paine, Paul Davies and Michael Bluemink. After the release of several singles on a self-financed label gained the attention of 808 State, Sunkings recorded the Return of the Killer Rays EP for 808's own Creed Records. Hugh Ashton replaced Bluemink around that time, just before the trio signed to GPR, home to recordings by Luke Slater and the Black Dog. Sunkings released their debut LP Hall of Heads in 1994 and earned plaudits from Brian Eno and John Peel…

One of the most popular jazz bands of the early Eighties, Steps Ahead (originally called Steps) was formed in 1979 by vibist Mike Mainieri, and at various times included tenorman Michael Brecker, keyboardists Don Grolnick and Eliane Elias, bassists Eddie Gomez and Darryl Jones and drummers Peter Erskine and Steve Smith, among many other first-rate artists. Steps Ahead's music successfully blended elements of jazz, rock, R&B and fusion, enjoying astonishing worldwide international success in the process.

This film, which opens with Pass playing alone on six wonderful tunes, was made during a European tour that took place some months before the recording of their second album as a duet, titled precisely Fitzgerald & Pass Again, taped on February 8, 1975. Thus, it presents some tunes that would be part of that LP, making this program (and probably the whole tour) a kind of rehearsal for the songs to be included on the studio album.

Wild Life is the debut album by Wings. Paul and Linda McCartney had worked with drummer Denny Seiwell on their previous album, Ram, and they added Denny Laine, the former leader of the Moody Blues, to that trio to become Wings.
