What could be more experimental on the ultra-pluralistic contemporary scene than a composer unconcerned with individuality? For much of the time, David Bedford’s Recorder Concerto offers the kind of discreetly accompanied scales and arpeggios that have been standard issue from Vivaldi to Malcolm Arnold…

Scythe is steeped in seventies symphonic prog. The band draw from a wide variety of influences without one of them dominating their compositional approach. Therefore, their sound remains fresh and original while at the same time recalling the great days of progressive rock. There are plenty of influences from Genesis and Yes. The music does have a modern feel and recording quality to it. Scythe play what they themselves call "symphonic progressive rock with an edge".

Blues hall of famer sounds far younger than he has a right to at his age. “I’m old school and that’s alright, I’ve still got a young blood’s appetite,” so sings Joe Louis Walker on the track “Buzz On You.” And in doing so, he might just have summed this record up rather perfectly…

Although it's filled with more pop than reggae, Serious Business represents a pivotal time for Third World. The talented group had spent the '70s and early '80s riding the precarious wave between roots reggae and pop-oriented, crossover reggae. Released in 1989, Serious Business announced the direction that Third World would take from then on. From the catchy, fluffy radio hit "Forbidden Love" to the gratuitous rap solo on "Theme From the Underdog," it's clear that the band chose the pop side and was making no apologies.

Label: South Records | Release Year: 2015

The Grahams are New York-based husband-and-wife duo Doug and Alyssa Graham, who made their debut in 2013 with Riverman's Daughter, a thematic collection of country and roots rock songs inspired by a trip down the Mississippi River's historic Great River Road. On their 2015 follow-up Glory Bound, they've taken a similar conceptual tack, focusing their artistic efforts this time on the great American railways. As with their previous venture down the Mississippi, they sought an authentic, hands-on experience and, following in the footsteps of heroes like Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, took several of their own train trips for inspiration, meeting up with potential producers along the way.

His first new studio album in four years and also his tenth, Dystopian Dream brings together the full breadth of Sawhney’s 360 degree global panorama in his strongest and most refreshing affirmation to date. A distinct departure from Sawhney’s previous 9 studio albums, Dystopian Dream focuses on Sawhney’s familiar motifs of personal identity and swooping world-views, but this time driven by more cathartic themes of loss, isolation, surrender and perseverance. Featuring a bluesier, darker, more contemporary influence, the album is a modern homage to Massive Attack’s classic “Protection” album in its eclecticism and production values.

Our series of acclaimed overviews of the labels originally owned by the Bihari brothers has already featured RPM and Flair. Now it's the turn of Kent to receive the Ace treatment. In 1958 the brothers closed down all their existing imprints and incorporated Kent as their sole singles label. Initially offering a mixture of musical styles, the label quickly became a home for West Coast R&B as its predecessors. Kent existed until 1972 when the Bihari family pulled out of front-line record production.

Celebrated jazz singer Alice Zawadzki and pianist Dan Whieldon have a powerful musical affinity which is palpable throughout this CD. Alice describes their connection as "some kind of telepathy", a synchronicity which brings stunning musical results. This collection of songs pay tribute to the styles which have influenced these outstanding musicians. Jazz is at the heart of the disc, but there are nods to classical and continental folk styles as well.

Dylan followed Oh Mercy, his most critically acclaimed album in years, with Under the Red Sky, a record that seemed like a conscious recoil from that album's depth and atmosphere. By signing Don Was, the king of mature retro-rock, as producer, he guaranteed that the record would be lean and direct, which is perhaps exactly what this collection of simplistic songs deserves. Still, this record feels a little ephemeral, a collection of songs that Dylan didn't really care that much about.

Cellist Sol Gabetta has long wanted Pēteris Vasks to compose a concerto in collaboration with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and its Artistic Director Candida Thompson, will present the new work at last. Latvian composer Vasks stands out among his contemporaries as an especially versatile composer, writing in different timbres and tunings to create hugely varied sound worlds. This can be heard in his eight works for string orchestra and three concertos for violin and strings.
