Few can match drummer Daniel Freedman when it comes to pan-stylistic jazz presentations that cut across cultural lines. This lifelong New Yorker has found a way to bridge sonic worlds, erase boundary lines, and merge various musical languages in masterful fashion in his own work and in support of others. It's no wonder why the best of the best—the one and only Sting, West African superstar Angelique Kidjo, and Israeli clarinet queen Anat Cohen, to mention three—have called on Freedman. He isn't nearly as well-known as he should be at this point, due in no small part to the fact that his sideman duties take up much of his time, but with each successive release under his own name he furthers his reputation as one of the most open-minded drummer-leaders on record.

Fallen Angels may have been recorded at the same session as 2015's moody Shadows in the Night, but its tone is very different. Call Fallen Angels the Nice 'n' Easy to the No One Cares of Shadows in the Night: they're both tributes to Frank Sinatra, but the 2016 album is light at heart. It's filled with songs of love, not heartbreak, and Dylan's band plays the numbers as sweet shuffles that function as a counterpart to the gloomy saloon tunes that filled Shadows in the Night.

A terrific collection of late-'60s/early-'70s funk singles that barely scraped the local charts, Voodoo Soul unearths a pile of gold in its 16 tracks. The Meters and Lee Dorsey loom large, but samples from the bygone careers of Clemon Smith, Skip Easterling, and the Backyard Heavies are every bit as great. There's barely a hit listed among these songs, and that's exactly the point; as Voodoo Soul proves, New Orleans was a hotbed of great music from the ground up.

Only known for the one single in 1968 “Ice Cream Tree” /”Julius Caesar” on Mercury, (and largely misunderstood from this to be a ‘pop’ act), Birmingham’s Breakthru were in fact one of the loudest, hairiest and most exciting ‘psychedelic’ rock bands of their time. However, they could create soulful, sensitive or just plain ‘catchy’ sounds too. Young and very fashionable, many audiences had seen nothing like them. They took their wild stage show, complete with smoke and lights, all over Great Britain: Playing many of London’s most important clubs of the day in the process, such as “Happening 44”, “The Electric Garden”, “Blaises” and “The Marquee”. They also were resident at a club in Switzerland for a time, and made a big impression at Plumpton’s 1969 “National Jazz and Blues Festival”.

Perry Como rocks! Perry Como would have been aghast at the notion, but in the mid-to-late 1950s (when his TV show was the highest-rated show in the USA) he recorded a slew of singles that weren't really rock 'n' roll, but definitely rocked. These immaculately written, produced, and sung records are now heralded as the era's classics, and they include Kewpie Doll, Round And Round, Ko Ko Mo, Tina Marie, Hot Diggity, Catch A Falling Star, Magic Moments, Juke Box Baby, Glendora, Dancin', and Just Born To Be Your Baby.
