Rob McConnell's Boss Brass had not recorded since 1986 when they made this 1991 release. The leader had spent a year living in California, teaching at the Grove School, and the band was on hiatus. That all changed in late 1990 when McConnell returned to Toronto and brought back the Boss Brass, using similar personnel as he had earlier. The first comeback record is on the same level as the Boss Brass' earlier recordings, featuring such players as guitarist Ed Bickert (on Horace Silver's "Strollin'"); saxophonists Moe Koffman, Eugene Amaro, and Rick Wilkins; and trumpeters Guido Basso (featured on "Love of My Life") and John McLeod.A fine big band album. ~ Scott Yanow

Once dismissed as a Cecil Taylor imitator because of his jagged, percussive attack, pianist Matthew Shipp has gone on to distinguish himself as a true original, incorporating not only the history of jazz piano but also the hypnotic repetition of minimalism. He is an "idea man", but not merely a musical intellectual – his music offers challenges aplenty while demonstrating wit and passion.

During their late-'80s heyday, the Cult were known for their Doors-meets-Zeppelin-meets-Love and Rockets style, combining mysticism, solid three-chord guitar progressions, and goth rock stylings. In their 2001 incarnation, the Cult may be more accurately described as the Doors meets Zeppelin meets Tool. Guitarist Billy Duffy seems to have discovered distortion in the seven years since their last album. Not warm fuzz tones, but bone-crunching, mind-numbing distortion. While the music has changed, it still sounds like the Cult thanks to singer Ian Astbury's consistent wails and moans.

This single CD reissues all of the music from a former LP and a ten-inch LP. Of greatest interest are two fairly long selections (the blues "I Wrote This for the Kid" and a stomping "The Kid and the Brute") that match Illinois Jacquet with fellow tenor great Ben Webster. Since they have equally passionate and distinctive sounds, their "battle" is a draw. ~ AllMusic

Ever since 2001's Songs from the West Coast, Elton John and his longtime collaborator, Bernie Taupin, have been deliberately and unapologetically chasing their glory days of the early '70s, but nowhere have they been as candid in evoking those memories as they are on 2006's The Captain & the Kid, the explicitly stated sequel to 1975's masterpiece Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy…

Though he made vocal recordings in the early 1950s, Oscar Peterson would seldom sing later in his career. His reluctance was caused by something that would deter few others: his voice sounded remarkably like Nat "King" Cole's. It's a talent that dovetails with Peterson's piano playing and shared roots to make this tribute, recorded in 1965 after Cole's death, especially effective. ~ Stuart Broomer

To celebrate Leonard Bernstein's 90th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon has issued a number of musically and historically important performances on DVD. These DVDs document the astonishing talent and virtuosity of Bernstein in a variety of works. The concerts are taken from the 1970s and 1980s and many include Bernstein's educational introductions to the pieces. His invaluable ability to communicate music and teach the general public still astounds as much as his energy and skill on the podium.
