When Dutch pianist, composer and humorist Misha Mengelberg, one of the heroes of the "new Dutch swing," got together with Dave Douglas for a couple of duo gigs, they enjoyed it so much they decided to expand things to a quartet with New York bassist Brad Jones (who performs regularly with Dave and is on Misha's Avant CD Who's Bridge) and Misha's longtime colleague Han Bennink on drums.

Compiled by Murphy himself, Wild Birds is a well-timed collection spanning the five albums he recorded for Beggars Banquet between 1985 and 1995.

Love and Rockets' first career-spanning compilation is a treat for listeners who understand that the trio was yet another alternative artist of the '80s (in similar company with the Smiths, the Cure, and Echo & the Bunnymen) capable of impressing with both their LP and 12" output.

Noel Mewton-Wood’s (1922-53) journey from underestimated virtuoso to present-day icon is cause for both celebration and irony. Glowing testimonials to his ‘genius’ (Sir Malcolm Sargent) from Myra Hess, Beecham, Schnabel, Bliss, Hindemith and Britten were countered by indifference from the major record labels and concert managements, a situation that doubtless contributed to his suicide at the age of 31. Behind an ebullient surface, Mewton-Wood was a romantic idealist, susceptible to depression and mood-swings. So it is hardly surprising to find the dichotomy reflected in performances which alternate a luminous poetic delicacy with a rare energy and bravura. [[i]Bryce Morrison, Gramophone, November 2003]

Witching Hour is really good. They play a brand of blackened thrash metal and do it quite well. The riffs are speeding, the drummer is pounding along, the album as a whole sounds like it's from Hell. Really mean stuff written for this release. Check this one out, you won't want to miss out on the onslaught. Enjoy guys!

We have combined in two volumes the splendid recordings made by Louis Armstrong during his employment as a sideman in the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. Obviously, and with immense satisfaction, we omitted all those sides in which, although Louis is present, he doesn't perform as a soloist , so boring and tedious were Mr Henderson's routines in those days. ~ from Linear Notes

Given the heartbreaking context in which this album was released – this was the final recording by saxophonist Michael Brecker, who died of myelodysplastic syndrome and leukemia only a few months before its release – there might be a certain temptation to cut it some slack for sentimental reasons. Towards the Megalith is a brilliant example of how the atmosphere in old school death metal can be combined with the rigor and riff count of more modern outfits to supreme effect. The riffs are cavernous bastions of monstrous scope and force.
