He was only 16 years old at the time of release, but you wouldn't know it from the way he plays guitar – this kid has the chops some seasoned professionals dream of, and has gained a lot of respect for them. The big problem comes when he opens his mouth to sing – he does a credible job of trying to nail down that rough blues vocal tone, but he more often than not sounds just like a kid trying to get to a grown-up voice. Meanwhile, his band is well-worn and the songwriting is definitely up to par.–by Steven McDonald
"Solo" presents John Hammond at his best as a master of the country blues. Besides his heartfelt renderings of Robert Johnson classics, John includes some moaning and wailing tracks like "Drifting Blues" and "The Sky is Crying" that will surely carry the listener into the deep delta blues." are sure to get you jumpin' and jivin'….
Recorded in the autumn of 1989 this was the debut album of the newly formed Paul Lamb & the King Snakes. The songs were all covers but certainly show the undoubted brilliance of Paul’s harp playing, combined with the band’s great technical skills & tight performances. This set the standard for blues bands for years to come.
Jazz Icons: Anita O’Day boasts two wonderful concerts from 1963 and 1970 that present the “jazz singer supreme” in impeccable form. O’Day’s horn-based approach to singing is in full effect throughout both shows including stand-out renditions in each show of audience favorites “Tea For Two” and “Sweet Georgia Brown” (both reprised from her triumphant appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.) This DVD is a fitting testimony to one of jazz music’s true originals and shows unequivocally why she is ranked in the top tier of vocalists along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.
he Finnish horror heavy metallers Domination Black are going to unleash their long-awaited third full-length studio album in February 2012. The album called "Dimension: Death" will see the daylight on 22nd February 2012 via Kanki Rekords.
Soulfly incite a musical uprising on Enslaved, their eighth album for Roadrunner Records. Soulfly have become deadlier and more dangerous with each critically acclaimed successive release, but Enslaved sees them roaring like never before. This time around, the heavy metal tribe treads extreme territory by incorporating blast beats, violent riffs and wheezing whammy squeals into its patented groove-driven war cry. All of those elements converge within a concept record about slavery. This is also the inaugural offering from the group's new lineup featuring bassist Tony Campos (ex-Static-X, Asesino) and drummer David Kinkade (Borknagar).
