This nearly hour-long set by Johnny Griffin comes from a 1978 concert in Warsaw. The Little Giant is in great form, though the track listing on the rear of CD is bound to confuse first-time listeners. The opening set begins with a four minutes of a chant-like vamp, before segueing directly into a lively arrangement of "A Night in Tunisia," which will definitely surprise anyone expecting "Body and Soul" (which is incorrectly labeled as track one); both pianist Pat Coil and drummer Art Taylor are also featured to good effect. Griffin's explosive take of "All the Things You Are" takes no prisoners, following it with lyrical interpretation of "Body and Soul."

When Sting embarked on his solo career, he didn't throw his tenure with the Police out the window; on this live double album from his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour, he reworks some odd selections from his old band's catalog in the expansive, jazz-inflected style of his new crew (which included saxophonist Branford Marsalis). These performances emphasize showmanship (solos, backup singers, and all) and they've got lots of crowd-pleasing moments, like the overwhelming swell of 'I Burn for You' and a Caribbean clap-along on a medley of 'One World' and 'Love Is the Seventh Wave'. The bonus DVD provides the viewer with a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of the band at work. The film observes Sting and his new band as they rehearse and then perform their first concert, in Paris.

Saxon followed up four or five brilliant albums with a bevy of pretty lousy ones, making any greatest hits set a tricky proposition for these New Wave of British Heavy Metal mainstays. … Although the material was soulful and funky, the basic underpinning of what the group did was smoky vocal jazz. Throughout the album, it works beautifully, mixing the best of old and new into a thoughtful brew that stands up to repeated listenings. The band's interpretation of Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" is a particular highlight.
