This program presents Argentinean jazz legend Gato Barbieri in a live performance. The show takes place in the Latin quarter in New York. The dancers move to the hot sounds of Barbieri's band. Gato Barbieri is sonorous on the saxophone. The evening of Latin jazz features a host of other great musicians, including Robbie Gonzalez, Mario Rodriguez, Mark Soskin, and Frank Colon. Gato Barbieri took the saxophone style of John Coltrane and adapted it to South American tango and folk idioms. His trademark piercing tenor cries ring through on this 1999 live date from New York City's Latin Quarter club.

Gramola presents their second production devoted exclusively to Hans Gal. Young Salzburg violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger has recorded the Violin Concerto and the two Sonatas for Violin and Piano with the Israel Chamber Orchestra under its resident conductor, Roberto Paternostro, and pianist Evgeni Sinaiski. The composer, who was driven into exile in 1938, saw himself in deliberate opposition to the Second Viennese School and referred to the Viennese tradition up to Brahms, the edition of whose complete notes he had also supervised.

Brouwer has an enviable command of a wide range of orchestration and composition techniques. She writes in a mixture of idioms both modern and somehow protypically American. "Mandala" is reminiscent of Hovhannes' modal work, "Remembrances" reminds me ever so slightly of similar tone poems by Diamond and Barber. I love all the music on this disc, but I must confess that "Remembrances" is my personal favorite. Written upon the death of a colleague, this piece strikes a ………

Live at the Moody Theatre contains a single performance that transcends virtually all the remaining tracks of its two CDs and one DVD. On "Your Wildest Dreams," Haynes' singing is as fiercely restrained as his guitar work and all the more powerful for that discipline. Close to the longest cut on the set at 11-plus minutes, there is nevertheless not a wasted note in the creation of an emotional impact that appears only sporadically elsewhere. A bonus track included on the DVD nevertheless comes close: performing only with bassist Ron Johnson and drummer Terence Higgins (on hand drum), Haynes' reading of "Patchwork Quilt," an account of his learning of Jerry Garcia's death, brings that moment alive in all its deeply bittersweet emotion.
