    George Antheil - Piano Works
    Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Cover+Booklet | 263 Mb
    Label: Albany - Date: 1994

As Joseph Fennimore writes in his notes for this very well documented CD, "Ms. Verbit is the first pianist to have undertaken the Olympian task of deciphering and recording these early pieces of Antheil. She uniquely has the requisite tenacity, skill and resources for the task. Dedication is the word. Her researches have been thorough, her relationship with Antheil becoming deeply personal even though they never met. Everything about him that could be known, she has learnt. When she refers to Antheil as "George," one has the feeling he asked her to call him that."

    Label: Alive Natural Sound | Tracks: 10 | Rls.date: 2012-08-07

Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. is a heady synthesis of not only their own previous efforts, but also the many unique styles of music cultivated on American soil over the last five decades. From late '60s psychedelia, blues, Americana, garage rock and the folk rock sounds that rolled out of Laurel Canyon in the early '70s. An intoxicating album that sounds as timeless as it does remarkably fresh and quite unlike anything else being released today.

Since their last release in 2004, the Blue Hearts have matured as a band and individually as musicians. This CD has all original material written by Ryan Hartt & his cohort Eric Ducoff and has a good time gut bucket sound with excellent harp playing and tasteful traditional guitar work from Eric Ducoff. Hartt's vocals are strong and natural and the band sounds like they have played the songs for a while which adds a listenability to the entire proceedings.

Gianandrea Noseda understands the music's lyrical strength and fragile soundworld perfectly; the playing of the BBC Philharmonic is exemplary, too.
    The Guardian
It's good to have these rare items played by a first-class orchestra, and finely recorded. James Ehnes is an eloquent soloist… and Gianandrea Noseda's affection for the music is evident throughout.

Fa eccezione…

Art Tatum: The Art of Jazz Piano is still the only documentary portrait of the greatest jazz pianist ever. Using photographs and some rare footage of Tatum and his contemporaries, the film reconstructs his genius. Included are interviews with musicians who played with him or who were influenced strongly by him, including Guitarists Tiny Grimes and Les Paul, and pianists Marian McPartland, Hank Jones, Dick Hyman, and George Shearing. Their reminiscences and demonstrations underline Tatum's stutus as the "musician's musician."

Georgia-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter Beverly "Guitar" Watkins is one part soul singer, one part rockin' roadhouse mama, and one part gifted songwriter. She's also been chronically under-recorded for a woman with her résumé: she spent the early '60s playing rhythm guitar with Piano Red & the Interns. She recorded with Piano Red from 1959 until the mid-'60s, and can be heard on his popular singles "Doctor Feelgood" and "Right String But the Wrong Yo Yo." Watkins learned guitar and got her earliest musical sensibilities from several of her aunts, who had a quartet named the Hayes Family.

The Wood Brothers' debut album is a tense and hushed affair full of weighted lyrics peppered with words like truth, faith, spirit, and soul and more angels than you can shake a stick at, and each song seems tipped right at the edge of indecision and confusion. These are largely Oliver Wood's songs, with his brother Chris Wood (of Medeski, Martin & Wood) adding bass and backing vocals and Kenny Wollesen bringing light drums and percussion to five tracks…..

Big Joe Louis replaced Mike Sanchez before the recording of this 2001 release, divided between Louis originals and covers of not-very-well-known songs by fairly renowned bluesmen. Louis has a deep, gruff voice, not great, but not as devoid of personality as those of many blues groups playing in a 1950s R&B-blues style. That's what the Big Town Playboys do, competently and reverently, on this disc. From their arrangements (which include saxophones) and taste in material, it's obvious that these are the guys buying those esoteric reissues of '50s blues and R&B from the Modern and Specialty catalogs. This doesn't reinvent that wheel, but emulates and revives it. –by Richie Unterberger
