Bandleader, guitarists and songwriter Russ Freeman pulls no stops on the Rippingtons' 25th anniversary release, Built to Last, featuring a full orchestra to complement the sound of his compositions, has he runs the gamut of the sounds that have influenced him throughout the years, moving from movie score-like tunes to heavy metal, country & western and retro-sounding jazz.
After 25 years of worldwide success along with his former bands Viper, Angra, Shaman and currently Andre Matos Band, the Brazilian vocalist amazes one more time the international scene with the release of the excellent The Turn of the Lights, which has already been praised as the best album of his career.The album is not kept under only one musical style, on the contrary, it is about freedom. Indeed, the track Liberty opens a series of 11 absolute killer songs, that feature all fine qualities: exciting riffs, catchy melodies, memorable choruses and intelligent lyrics, all built with great taste and performed to perfection.
Very groovy stuff – two unlikely gems from mid 70s MPS! First up is Amazing Strings from Svend Asmussen – a set that features his famous jazz violin in the lead, but amidst larger arrangements that feature MPS players like Dieter Reith on keyboards, Sigi Schwab on guitar, and Gunter Lenz on bass! The tunes are mostly classical numbers, but are mixed with fresh arrangements from Christian Schmitz Steinberg – who swings them with a Euro jazzy style that's mighty nice, especially when the keyboards and guitar kick into the mix! Titles include "Golgatha", "Men's Living Joy", "Danse De Jeunes Filles", "Fur Elise", and "Ah Vous Dirais Je Maman". Rockin Bach Dimensions is even cooler – a batch of numbers penned by Johann Sebastian Bach, but taken to groovy new heights by some funky MPS players of the 70s!

It's hard to believe that no one before now has made a complete recording of this, one of Korngold's most famous and beloved film scores–but it certainly has been worth the wait.
