This record is a beautiful way to commemorate the 25th anniversary of a jazz club that will carry on providing awesome chapters of live jazz history in the near future… Present has deemed to gather Jorge Pardo, Chonchi Heredia, Josemi Carmona, Javier Colina, Jeff Ballard and Abe Rábade together to play and perform two memorable shows last February 1st to 2nd 2012.

Schäfer, a professor at the Munich Conservatoire, proves with this collection, and with the last piece as well as with much else on this CD, to be completely au fait with Scott’s compositional style; more, his interpretations are full of charm and grace. At times he is perhaps somewhat less sharp-edged than some, but this remains an excellent introduction to the music of Scott.

Nothing is quite as it seems in Dallapiccola's substantial Partita (very much the main meat of this release). Or indeed, in any of the music on this disc. It all has a faintly nightmarish quality - like strolling through a landscape you thought you knew well, only to find it shifting around, above and beneath you. Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra have the measure of this unsettling yet captivating music. They guide us safely ……..

By placing the location and dates, "New York City, September 19-20, 2001," on the stark cover of this concert album, Laurie Anderson evokes the context in which the shows from which it was drawn occurred: They took place less than two weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the city that was one of the principal targets. Anderson is not the sort of artist one would think of immediately as an ideal commentator on those cataclysmic events; hers is a cool, ironic persona, and irony was one of the immediate casualties of the attacks. Her introductory comments do not bode well, as she speaks, in her perpetually becalmed voice, of the "great opportunity" the attacks provide to "live in a completely new world," surely not a sentiment her listeners can have shared, as the sparse applause indicates.

Albedo is a concept compilation where all tracks contribute to a single unified story. On his first official mix release on Ultimae Records, Nova has selected a kaleidoscopic array of new panoramic tunes with a strong cinematic feeling and a common fil rouge that tells a story of light beams falling on Earth, reaching different corners of the planet, from natural lonely environments of forests, empty shores and arctic landscapes to more busy urban cyberspaces ending in an ethereal, tribal yet meditative sunset.

The opportunity to see the “Father” of the tenor sax, Coleman Hawkins (1904-1969), on video is a rare one. During Hawkins’ prime – in the 30s to 50s – there is very little video archived of viewable quality, so it is a special treat to have 140 minutes of the master playing at the end of his career. Hawkins had begun to deteriorate rapidly at the end of his career beginning in 1967, when he largely stopped eating and began to drink even more heavily. He was a wisp of his formerly robust stature in 1969 when he passed away. The jazz world had changed, as free jazz had begun to creep onto the jazz scene, and although Hawkins had survived and even mastered the bop idiom of the late 40s and early 50s, he had a hard time accepting some of the directions that jazz was heading.

Alex Terry, an Australian who plays the blues as if he grew up in Chicago, presents his first studio CD: Goin' Down Slow. Together with his band, Alex sings and plays that Mississippi saxophone (blues harmonica, that is) on a number of blues classics, all performed with taste, raw power, and that magic touch of Chicago smoke! Check out "Up the Line" and "Caledonia" for a feel for what Alex and his rockin' band are up to with the blues.
