Bobby “Blue” Bland was one of the finest voices in post-war blues, and FARTHER UP THE ROAD offers a glimpse of his talent in its early, developmental phase.

Toto was formed in Los Angeles in 1978 by David Paich (b. June 21, 1954, Los Angeles; keyboards, vocals), Steve Lukather (b. October 21, 1957, Los Angeles; guitar, vocals), Bobby Kimball (b. Robert Toteaux, March 29, 1947, Vinton, LA; vocals), Steve Porcaro (b. September 2, 1957, Connecticut; keyboards), David Hungate (b. Texas; bass), and Jeff Porcaro (b. April 1, 1954, Hartford, CT; d. August 5, 1992, Hidden Hills, CA; drums). Paich was the son of arranger Marty Paich; the Porcaros were the sons of percussionist Joe Porcaro.

In a very short time, Bassekou Kouyate has established himself as one of Mali’s most popular artists, both in the recording studio and on the live stage. Kouyate also rejoices in an unusual band formation, which includes four players of the n’goni, manifested in its differing tonal sizes. It’s a gossamer string deluge.

…Rapoport’s instrument, by the way, is a copy by Oliver Cottet of a bassoon by Prudent of around 1760 – just right for the music. Dard’s prefatory note, to return to it for a last time, speaks of the desirability of performers bringing to the works "the necessary lightness and feeling". Rapoport and Dubreuil very definitely do so…
