The thought-provoking first lady of techno Miss Kittin returns with her third album, the self-produced double CD and Four LP set 'Calling from the Stars', released through Parisian label Wsphere records. The album offers up all of the elements that have made Miss Kittin one of the most popular names in electronic music: simple yet evocative lyrics set to an undeniable electro-flavored techno beat. It also showcases a new side of the notoriously enigmatic Kittin, that of an artist unafraid to reveal her inner emotions and beliefs. The perfect primer for the evolved techno-pop sound that makes up disc one of the album.

2009 release, the sixth solo album from this Sheffield, England singer/songwriter and former Pulp sideman. The album's lush production provides a haunting backdrop to Hawley's unique voice and allows plenty of space for beautiful guitar solos. 'I wanted it to be a listening experience from start to finish, where you couldn't just pause it and go off and watch Coronation Street or whatever,' explains Hawley. 'Sonically, it flows. It's not jumping all over the place. It just has a mood that goes through the whole thing.' Thematically his darkest work to date, Truelove's Gutter explores the idea of people or things that are broken in some way, and the fractured and damaged times in which we live, to which Hawley's lyrics profoundly attest.

Remastered CD release of a 1958 LP with the young (20 yo then) trumpetist Booker Little, member of a quartet (with George Coleman sax, Tommy Flanagan piano, Art Davis bass), and the great Max Roach drums. Booker was about to be a member of the "new Max Roach quintet", replacing the early lost Clifford Brown. This CD release has 2 bonus tracks (7 & 8), with Booker Little and an octet but without Max. More classy jazz from the 50's. Enjoy.

The world premiere of Nixon in China in October 1987 inaugurated a fresh era in American opera. The piece boldly carved out new territory by treating recent American history as suitably mythic operatic material. Skeptics thought this could result only in a trendily pop art-style ridicule of well-known political icons, but it turned out to be as valid a choice as Wagner’s dysfunctional gods or the tormented passions of verismo lovers. Years after the opera’s initial run at the Houston Grand Opera, Nixon is now recognized as a 20th-century masterpiece… —Thomas May
