    Progressive Metal

Tenebris is yet another in a long line of cool Polish prog metal bands and they’ve actually been around in one form or another since the early 90s (after a short break around 2004). Now after four years, the band has come out with Alpha Orionis and what a difference a few years can make! This is a much more intricate and varied album with a ton to offer any prog metal fan. Tenebris is a five-piece band (with the addition of keyboards to the standard lineup) and the guys here are seriously interested in all things outer space, hence the pics on their albums of aliens or, as on the new album, a cool picture of indigenous peoples (Mayan perhaps?) being greeted by a tall four-armed visitor. t’s been a great year so far for Polish prog metal with the releases of the new Riverside and DispersE albums along with the upcoming new album by Votum. Somehow I get the feeling that Tenebris is not as well-known as these other stellar groups but I hope that’ll be changing soon with the release of this excellent new album.

    Black Metal

Black Metal is dead – long live Negator! Hailing from the halls of eternal frost, Negator forge their relentless Black Metal in Germany’s eternal Metal-City: Hamburg. "Gates To The Pantheon", the fourth album from the German black/death quintet NEGATOR."Gates To The Pantheon", NEGATOR's first new music in over three years, is the follow-up to their highly acclaimed third album "Panzer Metal". That release caught the attention of Swedish legends DARK FUNERAL, who subsequently enlisted NEGATOR vocalist Nachtgarm to front their band throughout 2011 and 2012. The new album — recorded at Hammer Studios in Hamburg with producer Eike Freese (GAMMA RAY, CALLEJON, DARK AGE) — features nine bloodthirsty tracks of pounding blackened death, hailed by JOB FOR A COWBOY guitarist Alan Glassman as "one of the angriest-sounding releases I've ever heard — a black metal masterpiece."

Like trapped in his antagonism, Man can be considered like a dangerous destroyer as well as a creative genius. Always a question of age, often of temper, and courage sometimes… His carefreeness may be a quality or a flaw. The child’s carefreeness leads to dreams whereas for the adult it is often an omission of priorities. « Toxic Parasites » is both a shout of rebellion and a shout for love for those who crown the world with the beauty it deserves. If the music of Sebastien Texier gives optimism and solemnity, it is because it is rushed and parasited by the intentions of his sidemen. Out of these collisions, birth is given to new musical situations which evoke the complexity of mankind. Unconscious but concerned, nonchalant but responsible. And, not to be forgotten, capable of the very best…

This album marked the formal debut of the psychedelic-era Moody Blues; though they'd made a pair of singles featuring new (as of 1966) members Justin Hayward and John Lodge, Days of Future Passed was a lot bolder and more ambitious. What surprises first-time listeners – and delighted them at the time – is the degree to which the group shares the spotlight with the London Festival Orchestra without compromising their sound or getting lost in the lush mix of sounds. That's mostly because they came to this album with the strongest, most cohesive body of songs in their history, having spent the previous year working up a new stage act and a new body of material (and working the bugs out of it on-stage), the best of which ended up here.

Canned Heat - Live At Montreux is another gem from the Eagle Rock Entertainment collection. This concert on DVD, from 1973, not only portrays the great Bob ‘The Bear’ Hite in action, it’s one of the finest shows in existence containing some of the original and early lineup. It’s also a fine tribute to just how raw and spontaneous the blues-rock stage shows of the late sixties and early Seventies were. Furthermore, when someone states (and they often do) that Canned Heat was the exemplary white blues band of the era, this recorded footage is testimonial to the fact that they were at least on a pedestal with the best. It was the ‘boogie’ part of their music style, from the school of John Lee Hooker, that set them apart from their counterparts in the subliminal genus of ‘white boys play the blues’.

Turkey has long had a reputation for being the most westernized country in the Islamic world. As a result, a lot of North American music that is frowned upon by the far-right Islamic fundamentalist governments of Saudi Arabia and the Sudan – music ranging from alternative rock to hip-hop to jazz – isn't hard to find in Istanbul or Ankara. And there are visits by American bluesmen like John Lee Hooker, Jr…

Direct from Brazil comes this deeply appreciative musical tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), co-founder and leading composer of the Bossa Nova.
With over four hundred songs to his credit, Jobim virtually single-handedly brought the Bossa Nova to the world, where it became a staple ingredient in the jazz cookbook. Jobim's new sound adapted the rhythmic variety and percussive excitement of the samba to the intimacy of syncopated guitar, while echoing the melodies and harmonies of cool jazz.
