AC/DC wasn't the only great Australian hard-rock band to come out of the '70s; Rose Tattoo's blues-based heavier-than-thou sound made them legends down under, even if they never broke out in America like their aforementioned countrymen. PAIN finds the band hitting it harder than ever 25 years into their career. Singer Angry Anderson and slide-guitar demon Peter Wells still front the band as they pound through blistering tunes teeming with full-throttle vocals and explosive guitar licks. Imagine AC/DC if they dropped the schoolboy humor and got really ticked off, and you'll have a fair idea about the sound of PAIN. First studio album in 17 years for Aussie hard rock act. 16 tracks, highlights include 'Black Magic', 'House Of Pain', 'Satan's Eyes' & 'Illustrated Man'. Steamhammer Records. 2002. Recorded at Karo Studio, Brachel, Germany. Personnel: Angry Anderson (vocals); Peter Wells (slide guitar); Paul DeMarco (drums). Audio Mixer: Herman Frank. Photographer: Jim Hilburn. Rose Tattoo: Angry Anderson (vocals); Rockin' Rob Riley (guitar); Pete Wells (slide guitar); Steve King (bass); Paul DeMarco (drums).

Avie continues to bring to light the music of Hans Gál – “music well worth championing,” according to The Sunday Times (London) – with the world premiere recording of the Third Symphony conducted by committed advocate, American conductor Kenneth Woods with the enterprising Stratford-upon-Avon based Orchestra of the Swan. Written in the post-war years, after the “continental Briton” had settled in Edinburgh, the work ranges from lyrical tranquillity to a densely contrapuntal and rhythmically complex style….

Schumann’s Piano Quintet, composed in the autumn of 1842, was one of the earliest examples of the combination of piano with a string quartet – Boccherini, Dussek and Hummel had each produced one, and Schubert used the double bass in his ‘Trout’ Quintet. It instantly became one of Schumann’s most popular works. It was composed at a time of almost feverish industry – he composed his three string quartets Op.41, the Piano Quartet and a set of Fantasy Pieces for piano trio, all in 1842. The piano quintet is a captivating, almost spontaneous work, and is a brilliant example of Schumann’s inspiration from start to finish.

Hawkwind's fifth studio album found the band enjoying a rare oasis of stability after the multitudinous personnel shifts of the past five years. Only the recruitment of a second drummer, Alan Powell, disturbed the equanimity of the lineup that created the previous year's Hall of the Mountain Grill, although it would soon be time to change again. By the end of the year, bassist Lemmy had departed, vocalist Robert Calvert had rejoined, and the group's career-long relationship with United Artists would be over. In the meantime, Warrior on the Edge of Time ensured that it was brainstorming business as usual.

These 25 tracks represent the Marmalade's complete recorded output for CBS Records, including a pair of outtakes. The band simply moves from strength to strength during their period with CBS, starting with the superb Mike Smith-produced "It's All Leading up to Saturday Night," with its great beat and catchy choruses, and getting better from there. The title track has a special resonance; it's a glistening piece that mixes hard-rock guitar and bass with exquisite harmonies in a manner that overlaps with the Hollies. Yet, with its careful use of guitar distortion pumped up to sound like an orchestra, and a soaring choral phrase or two, the song also strangely anticipates the sound of the Electric Light Orchestra at their most poppy.

As a teenager, David Newman played professionally around Dallas and Fort Worth with Charlie Parker's mentor, Buster Smith, and also with Ornette Coleman in a band led by tenor saxophonist Red Connors. In the early '50s, Newman worked locally with such R&B musicians as Lowell Fulson and T-Bone Walker. In 1952, Newman formed his longest-lasting and most important musical association with Ray Charles, who had played piano in Fulson's group. Newman stayed with Charles' band from 1954-1964, while concurrently recording as a leader and a sideman with, among others, his hometown associate, tenor saxophonist James Clay.
