One-man project Symptom from Portland, Oregon. This is genuine death AND doom, sharing characteristics endemic to both strains of extreme metal; not just relying on overwhelming mood through, an admittedly immense, wall of sound but also exhibiting a keen sense of dynamics and interlocking of ideas.

As scion of an illustrious musical family, the 29-year-old Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa is one of the brightest lights on Havana’s thriving jazz scene. Son of drummer Ruy Lopez-Nussa and nephew of pianist Ernan Lopez-Nussa, Harold gained international attention when he won top honors at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005.

Nearly one decade ago, After the Burial – a five-piece progressive metalcore/deathcore act – came together after a bunch of friends met at a high school in Minnesota. Since then, the band has released three albums: 2006's Forging a Future Self, 2008's Rareform (and the 2009 re-recorded version, which featured a new vocalist and a live drummer) and 2010's In Dreams. Fans have been anxiously awaiting more new material from the band, especially after a pre-production demo/video was released nearly two years ago. Finally, the guys are back in business and they are set to release Wolves Within on December 17 via Sumerian Records.

As the youngest brother of the massively popular Gibb siblings, otherwise known as the Bee Gees, it's no wonder that Andy Gibb was a superstar in his own right. An accomplished vocalist and writer, Gibb shot to the top of the charts with his 1977 debut Flowing Rivers. Shadow Dancing, released just one year later, effortlessly confirmed his ascension to the top of the pop pedestal. Working with his brothers again, Gibb wowed audiences with his easy-on-the-ears passionate pop.

…These performances come together brilliantly in this impressive recording. With the nicely balanced Met orchestra reproduced effectively here, the sound sometimes evokes the carefully voiced balances of studio recordings. Yet this is a live performance in which the musicians’ fine interactions add to the excitement. While some would hold that Il trovatore requires the finest principals for an effective performance, this recording also suggests that the sense of theatricality Verdi infused in this score affects the singers and drives them to give the intensely moving performances found in this exceptional release. More than that, the visual dimensions are enhanced with shots and angles that take the viewer to the stage. It is difficult not to become involved in this production through this well-crafted disc.

…The most striking performances include the worker's lament "The Lockman" and the astoundingly beautiful and lush "The Town Fell Asleep," certainly one his best-ever recordings. In the end, though, singling out songs from this remarkable album is nearly impossible; without any question, it's an out and out triumph.

Untimely Demise hails from Canada and joins the legions of awesome thrash bands that are now signed to Italian label Punishment 18 Records. “Systematic Eradication” marks their sophomore record, and is a blueprint for creating thrash that is sure to turn some heads. Starting with the obvious, the cover art, this is one of Ed Repka’s stronger showings in recent years. With that essential element secured, the band brought in Glen Drover (ex-Megadeth) to handle the production, and he did a stellar job. The guitars are truly massive, and when they utilize simpler riffs, it becomes immediately clear how perfect of a crunch they have. The other instruments generally compliment the guitars, as they are the highlight on “Systematic Eradication”.
