The 101 Strings Orchestra offers this compilation album that brings ten musical themes that were hits during the 40s. At that time prevailed in North America gold big bands (Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, etc..) and scenic subjects. The repertoire of this album features a chosen sample of issues that have kept the nostalgic version of the original hits, dressed with glitter and excitement that has always been able to provide this great orchestra.

The Argentine musician and pianist Raúl di Blasio recalls on this disc the music of tango and Gardel. He is accompanied by voices like 'El Consorcio' (5 songs), Michael Bolton and Fernando de la Mora, as he only has four issues exclusively as a soloist. Di Blasio, classically trained pianist, is also creator and lover of popular music. He is known as 'The American piano' and certainly is now one of the greatest pianists in the world.

This inexpensive reissue, without libretto but including decent notes, is very welcome and establishes that wonderful Handel singers are not exclusive to our own times. Rene Jacobs is a known quantity as an alto, and he is at least the equal of the current crop (Daniels, etc); Isabelle Poulenard is even-toned and lovely, as is the agile and stylish Sophie Boulin, bright-voiced but never shallow sounding, as can be too easily encountered. Everything about this recording reflects the genius of the composer and these gifted modern interpreters. Lack of drama – well, that is a personal taste, but I find the sheer musicality is absorbing and satisfying.

Little Plastic Castle posed an unusual challenge for Ani DiFranco. She released this record after spending a year promoting her first live CD (Living in Clip) by repeatedly admitting to reporters that her studio albums lack the vitality of her concert performances. Rock critics agreed en masse, and their praise for the live album helped to propel DiFranco to a new level of mainstream stardom – but it also heightened the scrutiny on her next studio recording. Fortunately, she managed to dodge several of the pitfalls of her previous albums. Her excellent band had plenty of time to jell on the road, and their performances here are as tight, driven and intense as they've ever been. Vocally, DiFranco is somewhat less affected than on previous albums, where the unnatural isolation of the studio sometimes led her to unnatural mannerisms. Her songwriting, however, is not quite up to par.
