Part of a trilogy of mid-'70s releases that presents a much different side of the folk-based guitarist Gordon Giltrap, 1977's Perilous Journey is a strictly instrumental album recorded with an enormous cadre of friends and studio musicians. The sound of this record will be instantly familiar to anyone who watched an industrial training film, classy porn flick, or documentary TV series in the 1980s…
Danzig debuts with a record of simple, pounding, bluesy metal featuring lead singer Glenn Danzig's trademark Elvis-meets-Jim Morrison bellow and outlandishly dark, evil lyrics. There isn't a great deal of musical variety or complexity here, but the band powers its way through such signature tunes as "Twist of Cain," "Am I Demon," and the (future) hit "Mother" with a primal energy…
For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
The highly sought after New York based pianist-composer continues his musical journey with Links . This high octane CD brings together three musicians with whom pianist Luis Perdomo has long standing musical relationships. Bassist Dwayne Burno and Luis began playing together soon after Luis' arrival in New York City by way of Caracas. Drummer Rodney Green often pairs up with Luis in a variety of ensembles, most notably on Joe Sanders' Criss Cross release Introducing Joe Sanders (Criss 1344 CD). Last but not least, Perdomo has been an integral part of the groundbreaking quartet led by saxophonist Miguel Zenón for the last 14 years.
Saul is among Handel’s most dramatic oratorios. As in almost no other Handel oratorio, the exciting drama of this work shows how close it was to the opera of that time. Through the use of harp and glockenspiel in the orchestra he impressively portrays the history of Saul and David with the sounds of ancient Israel.
Carl Leonhardt Conducts Handel: Rodelinde is a recording under the direction of Carl Leonhardt who leads Chor und Orchester Des Reicgssenders Stuggart on this hänsler Classic from 1938-1939. First of all one has to say that the recording is over 70 years old and bearing this in mind the recording is quite marvelous. The booklet is available in English, French, German and Spanish. Reinhard Ermen has written a short but very informative essay on the opera in question. I was very impressed with this recording, the singers, production and the conductor. Highly recommended.
