    Jazz Vocals | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 58 min | 137 MB
    Label: Nocturne | Rel: 2002

This is a rather addictive recording, in which Dina Blade performs intimate versions of the best-known Fields songs, accompanied only by Bill Mays. The most striking aspect of the recording is Blade's direct, confiding style. She clearly has great respect for both lyrics and music, and her fine voice is complimented by clear but unforced diction. She has the confidence to take some of these tracks very slowly indeed! A highlight is an insinuating version of Big Spender, which takes 5 seductive minutes. She performs some rarely-heard verses - both Don't Blame Me and Lovely To Look At include two verses.

Missy Higgins’ OZ is something different … an eclectic album of Aussie cover versions and a quirky book of related essays. The OZ album features Missy re-imagining 15 Australian songs that were originally recorded by a diverse set of artists including The Angels, Slim Dusty, Something For Kate, Warumpi Band, Paul Kelly and The Drones. In the accompanying OZ book, Missy uses each of those recordings as the starting point for a sprawling series of essays; reflecting on life, love and how not to wear high heels.

Kenny Wheeler's string of ECM recordings are all quite rewarding, generally avoiding the ECM stereotype of introspective long tones and silence. A fiery but thoughtful trumpeter whose style can range from advanced swinging to sound explorations, Wheeler is joined on this excellent set by tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, pianist John Taylor, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette. They perform a set of Wheeler's originals and each of the world class musicians has an opportunity to be featured.

More varied than its predecessor, Electric, Sonic Temple finds the Cult trying several different metal styles, from crunchy Electric-era '70s grooves and the fuzzy, noisy psychedelia of Love, to mellow ballads and commercial '80s hard rock. Not all of the experiments work, as some of the songs lean toward ponderousness, but enough of them do to send Sonic Temple into the Billboard Top Ten, due to the exposure provided by the hit single "Fire Woman." ~Allmusic

Ritchie Blackmore may have gotten more mileage out of the band name, but the original Rainbow's one album from 1968 shows that this quartet, completely unrelated to Blackmore's outfit, had the idea for appropriate nomenclature first. That said, After the Storm is one of those releases that isn't deservedly obscure per se, but definitely doesn't deserve automatic kudos for being rare and therefore valuable for that reason alone. One of any number of L.A. groups of their time and place, Rainbow put together plenty that was in the air around them, from Love's amazing confections to the Byrds' transmogrifications to Iron Butterfly's keyboard-heavy explorations (perhaps no surprise given that bandleader/chief songwriter W. David Mohr played both organ and piano) to all sorts of electric blues – the album's one cover is a take with saxophone of Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You."

The tour was preceded by whirlwind political campaign-style tour named "Korn Kampaign" (from August 17, 1998 in Los Angeles through September 1 in Phoenix) to promote the release of their album Follow the Leader. It took the group all over North America to spread the news of their "Family Values" platform to hordes of fans at special "fan conferences" that were organized at every stop along the tour route.

Produced by legendary producer Glyn Johns, the album was recorded to tape at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and features Tench handling lead vocals, piano and organs, joined by a team of collaborators including a core band of Don Was, Ethan Johns, Blake Mills and Jeremy Stacey and contributions by Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Joel Jerome, Tom Petty and Ringo Starr. As a Heartbreaker and on his own, Benmont Tench defines a supporting musician: versatile, tasteful, and distinctive; enhancing sessions without overwhelming the leader. He's so thoroughly part of a group that it's hard to picture him stepping to the center of the stage, but You Should Be So Lucky – his 2014 solo debut, released roughly 38 years after the first Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album – shows he's an appealingly ragged and relaxed frontman and one who knows not to abandon his core strengths.

A sketchy and underfocused debut, Rocka Rolla nonetheless begins to delineate the musical territory Judas Priest would explore over the remainder of the decade: frighteningly dark in its effect, tight in its grooves, and capable of expanding to epic song lengths…

It would be an understatement to say that there was a fair amount of variety on this set. Drummer Tony Williams is heard in two duets with keyboardist Jan Hammer, with a quartet also including keyboardist Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott (who unfortunately sticks to lyricon) and bassist Stanley Clarke, and he welcomes rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose, keyboardist Brian Auger, guitarist George Benson, Hammer and tenorman Michael Brecker on other tracks. Much of this music is closer to R&B than to jazz, although there are many strong moments. But the most interesting selection is certainly "Morgan's Motion" which matches Williams with pianist Cecil Taylor in a powerful (and completely atonal) collaboration.
