DBR takes his classical roots, stands them on their ends, and injects hip-hop, electronics, scratching, hard rock and more personality than you could ever imagine. "It’s an attempt to honor not only the first and second Viennese schools of Europe, but to pay tribute to the Bronx and the waves of inventions that that music sent to us," explains DBR. The Washington Post raved, “The music was involving, tonal and eminently accessible, steeped in the wash-rinse-repeat cycle of minimalism but sexed up considerably with hip-hop rhythms, jazz riffs and imaginative collaboration.” (Yes, it is complex and accessible, and that's a rare combination. And as a cellist he's not using cleavage and make-up to stand out…)

Recorded in 2001 (Mahler) and 2004 (Shostakovich), this 2007 ECM release provides a wonderful insight into Gidon Kremer's perspective on two composers who are clearly close to his heart. The performances are both fascinating, and the Kremerata Baltica give their not-inconsiderable all in both works.

Motown legend Stevie Wonder makes his way to Glastonbury to headline the final day of the festival's 40th Anniversary. With more Grammy Awards than any other male solo artist, the 60 year old R&B and soul icon is one of the most successful American artists of all time. The list of those he's influenced reads like a who's who of the music industry… and you can add Barack Obama to the list as well. His classic 1970's period produced some of his most well known hits, including Superstition, You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Higher Ground, Living For The City, Isn't She Lovely and I Wish.

For this quartet set with pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Charles Fambrough, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, Ernie Watts definitely came to play. Virtually all of his solos are high powered and even his ballad statements are filled with clusters of passionate notes. Trumpeter Arturo Sandval has two appearances and makes the music even more hyper. In addition, the rhythm section keeps the proceedings consistently stimulating. The main focus on these standards and originals is generally on Watts' tenor, and even though there isn't all that much variety, this CD is a strong example of his jazz talents.
