The GRP Band was a group compiled in the late 1980s under the direction of Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, principles of GRP Records. The band was a full band, and they mostly played well-known jazz pieces from the 1950s and 1960s written by famous musicians and composers. Many of these pieces were rearranged presenting a character of their ownLee Ritenour, Tom Scott, Randy Brecker and other big names from Dave Grushin's jazz label gather for a one-day, en masse blow-out. The repertoire includes be-bop, post-bop and contemporary standards, with Coltrane's "Blue Train" and Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" highlighting a disc that's markedly more spirited than the GRP norm. –Jeff Bateman

Aram Khachaturian ranks just behind Shostakovich and Prokofieff in the pantheon of 20th- century Russian music. Khachaturian's music, though, is far more "ethnic" than the music of the other two. His music never left the region of what was then the southern parts of the U.S.S.R. His Symphony 2 is perhaps darker–in both mood and orchestral color–than his other symphonies; but then it was written in 1943 in the midst of World War II and Stalin's ongoing purges of the Soviet bureaucracy. However, works such as Gayneh almost guaranteed that Khachaturian would stay out of jail.

Beginning with the song "Rien Ne S'arrête," this prescient collection of Patricia Kaas recordings includes the best songs from her 15-year recording career with Columbia, from her 1988 breakout on the yearning "D'Allemagne." Though the included version of "Mademoiselle Chante le Blues" isn't her original (it was recorded live in 2000), other than that small caveat, Best of 1987-2001 delivers Kaas' best-loved hits in the best sound they've ever been delivered. The package also includes a bonus track from 1999, "Mon Chercheur d'Or" and bonus track for Japan only, "La Vie En Rose".
