When a jazz improviser comes out with an album titled Tarantella, one cannot help but wonder if he is offering a fusion of jazz and southern Italian folk (the tarantella, after all, originated in Taranto, a coastal city in southeastern Italy, and became popular all over Campania, Calabria, and Sicily).

"My favourite piece on this Digital CD would have to be the Fantasie by Fauré as I frequently play it myself. This collection of marvelous French flute pieces is spectacular and I thoroughly enjoy listening to it. Susan Milan has the most amazing soft playing, but can also be very strong. Her vibrato is the most immense I've ever heard. And Ian Brown, well where do I start? The guy's a genius. The way he tickles the keys giving off a smooth and delicate sound, always in time. This is a definite 5 star rating." - Stephen O'Donnell

The music of Manu Katche lolls around, languorously getting where it desires to go, making expert use of space and silence. The French drummer garnered attention for work on classic rock records by Peter Gabriel and Sting before embarking on a solo tack as a jazz composer and bandleader.

To call Andrew Ripp a singer/songwriter is to leave something deep out of the equation. It’s true. He sings. And when he sings, something catches in your chest and you wonder why your heart is reacting to what is coming in your ears. It’s true. He’s a songwriter. He intricately weaves words into stories that have somehow aged and ripened and are sweet to ingest. But there is more. Maybe it has to do with the rock-infused tones that are ever present. Maybe it is more soulful than pop, or maybe it is more pop than soul? Or is it rock with some soul and a hint of pop with the songwriting of a well-lived life? Whatever you call it, Andrew has it.

Blur is the fifth album by English alternative rock band Blur. Released on 10 February 1997 in the UK, it reached the top of the UK album chart. Blur was also a hit in the US, with "Song 2" becoming a hit there and the album being certified Gold. It also spawned several hit singles in the UK, most notably "Beetlebum" and "Song 2". The album's style was resultant of Blur's dropping their previous Britpop mantle in favor of lo-fi and alternative rock recordings, reportedly at Graham Coxon's urging. As a result, Blur was a hit primarily because it proved that Blur could evolve beyond their Britpop roots. The album's move from Britpop was emphasised by this being the first Blur album not to use Stylorouge cover-art and also not to have lyrics and chords printed in the liner notes, instead having a composite photo of the band in the studio spread out over three panels. The album featured the first song in which Graham Coxon not only wrote the lyrics, but also provided lead vocals, for the song "You're So Great". He would later do the same for "Coffee & TV" for Blur's next album.

These guys never fail to blow us away – and albums like this have us coming back for more Indigo Jazz Unit again and again over the years! If anything, the group are better musically here than ever – even more jazz-based in their approach, mixing together hard piano-driven lines with massive bass and drums – very similar to Quasimode at points, but with a much darker edge too! As with all their albums, the packaging is quite spare, but the sound is wonderfully rich – and some of the numbers here show a newly lyrical side that only has us loving them more than ever, and really pushing them to the front of our club jazz list.

Recorded live in March 1964 in Stockholm (and never previously released), the band attacks its repertoire with an almost manic abandon. Check out the opener, entitled "The Opener": the band plays at a tempo that would exhaust most so-called "punk rock" bands! "Blow by Blow" is another wailer, and "Caravan" becomes an ominous almost-tango. Was Duke listening to rock and roll at the time, or just drinking a lot of coffee? We may never know – just get this album, if you're an Ellington fan, or a fan of hard-swinging modern big bands. ~CDUniverse
