HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1887, has, by virtue of both his immense output and colourful and accessible musical language, become the most celebrated Brazilian composer of all time. His work not only richly typifies the diverse and kaleidoscopic Brazilian scene but also, in its abundance, originality, and vitality, provided the key which unlocked Brazilian art music once and for all from the shackles of European late-Romanticism..

Compilations take their fair share of justified criticism, but sometimes you just feel like listening to one type of music – maybe slow music – maybe slow Baroque music – maybe slow Vivaldi. If that happens to be the case, then this Virgin Classics album of Vivaldi certainly fits the bill and, as compilations go, is nicely put together. Of course, it wouldn't be Vivaldi if it didn't have some Four Seasons, but only four of 18 tracks are devoted to this popular work, letting listeners branch out into the breadth of Vivaldi's other compositions. Virgin Classics also does listeners a favor by using strong performances by ensembles like the London Chamber Orchestra and the Taverner Choir, and exceptional soloists like countertenor David Daniels. Even the progression of keys from one track to another seems well thought out, never jarring listeners with radical, sudden changes. While the surrounding movements of these Adagios are equally gratifying and fulfilling, anyone looking specifically for some calming, laidback Baroque music would certainly do well with this album. ~ Mike D. In this continuation of his successful series of ‘songs without words' – songs for voice and piano transcribed for cello and piano – Mischa Maisky left the Austro-Germanic repertoire he had previously explored behind and turned to the songs of his motherland in this disc of Russian songs called "Vocalise." For fans of Maisky's earlier discs of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms, no more needed to be said: the same sweetly singing tone, the same warm-hearted phrasing, the same vibrato, portamento and glissando that distinguished Maisky's those discs was fully present here. From Glinka's lighthearted "The Lark" to Tchaikovsky's aching "None but the Lonely Heart" to Glazunov's yearning "Desire" to Rachmaninoff's melancholic "Sing Not to Me, Beautiful Maiden," Maisky was as wholly committed to these songs as he was to those of Schubert and his performances with pianist Pavel Gililov were as convincing as could be imagined. While this might not work for those who prefer their songs with words or their cello music abstract, for lovers of cello music who wish the 19th century repertoire contained more short but affecting works by Russian composers, Maisky's disc will be just the thing.

"Dominion" is the second album of Kamelot and the last with Mark Vanderbilt on vocals and Richard Warner on drums. The band uses the same music approach as in the first album, "Eternity". The album is not more mature than "Eternity", it could be titled as a sibling to that album. Probably most of the tracks of the two albums were composed at the same period of time…
