    One of the leading Japanese composers in the first half of the twentieth century. His music reflects elements of late romanticism, expressionism and impressionism, as well as of the traditional music of Japan. His Symphony No.1 was written in celebration of the 2600th anniversary of the foundation of Japan, with a first movement depicting the long history of the country, a second making insistent use of a folk-melody, and a third consisting of variations and a fugue on material derived from a Gagaku-like ceremonial song. The ballet music Heavenly Maiden and Fisherman is based on material from a Noh play.

    Following his excellent Haydn and Mozart fortepiano recordings for BIS, Ronald Brautigam turns his attention to Beethoven's complete piano music. The playing is riveting. The singular timbral qualities of Brautigam's instrument (a McNulty fortepiano based on an 1819 Conrad Graf model) enhance Brautigam's interpretive revelations. My original rating for this release was "wow!", which translates into "10/10". Don't miss it.

Shebanova is a laureate of four international piano competitions: "Concertino-Prague" (1969, 1st prize), in Geneva (1976, Grand Prix and two special prizes — "American" and Ernest Shelling), F. Chopin in Warsaw (1980, 2nd prize and two special prizes for the best performing of polonaise and concert), "Bosendorfer-Empire" in Brussels (1990, Grand Prix and three special prizes). The pianist has a busy schedule of appearances in the Soviet Union, in almost all European countries and in Philippines and Taiwan. During her six guest tours on Japan she gave more than 100 concerts. T. Shebanova has a vast repertoire, recorded more than 30 LPs and CDs for "Melodiya" company (USSR), "Victor", "CBS-Sony", "Pony-Canyon" (Japan). "Muza" (Poland), "Pan-ton" (Czechoslovakia), "Empire" (Belgium).
