Although it lacks a standout track on the level of Smart's "Inbetweener," Sleeper's second album, The It Girl, is a stronger effort, suggesting that lead singer/songwriter Louise Wener could develop into a distinctive talent. Certainly, her melodies and hooks are uniformly better this time around, ranging from the bouncy "Sale of the Century" to the sighing melancholy of "What Do I Do Now?"…

The man who invented free-jazz drumming some five decades ago remains as committed and uncompromising-and as ineffably great-as ever. These two releases are culled from live performances by Murray and saxophonist Sabir Mateen from 2002 and 2004. Joining them on various tracks are pianists Dave Burrell and John Blum, saxophonists Oluyemi Thomas and Louis Belogenis and bassist Alan Silva. Mateen has long been one of my favorites. Few saxophonists are better able to act and react in the moment. He can create with only the slightest input; give Mateen a cymbal ping and he'll use it as inspiration to construct a riveting 20-minute solo. Murray gives him a great deal more than a ping.

Holy Soldier's second disc stays within the boundaries of melodic metal, but is much mellower and a bit blusier than their debut. Vocalist Steven Patrick has a great voice and really makes the band. 'Gimme Shelter' an excellent Rolling Stones song, is capably redone on this disc. This album. like the debut, was also produced by ex-Bloodgood guitarist David Zaffiro. Their record company was their only reason for not becoming as big as bands like Stryper or Skid Row, because this album simply has everything that a good commercial metal album should have.

Live in Sevilla, recorded and released in the year 2000, is arguably the finest document in this extremely prolific jazz quartet's catalog. If there's anyone who still believes that John Zorn is nothing more than an avant-garde screamer, look no further. The interplay between Zorn's alto and the trumpet of Dave Douglas is nothing short of amazing, and each one's soloing is focused and intense. Joey Baron and Greg Cohen are a fantastic rhythm section; Cohen acts as anchor while Baron playfully dances around the beat, simultaneously supplying a driving pulse. Even when Zorn and Douglas enter the realm of extended techniques (as on the end of "Ne'eman"), Cohen and Baron keep things firmly grounded. Of course, the real stars of the show are Zorn and Douglas; their solos are never less than dazzling, and each has an utterly unique style.

Born out in Chicago, IL.A quartet of individuals wished to create the sounds of their favorite bands through their own project. Ourobiguous is the sum of parts that come from mathcore (Converge, Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan), black metal (Nagelfar, Oaks of Bethel, Shining, Emperor), doom (Katatonia, Asunder, Isis), grindcore/death metal (Napalm Death, Cephalic Carnage, Suffocation), and experimental (Faith No More, Meshuggah, Jesu). The desire to always expand upon their sound and experimental with different themes and concepts while always retaining a very unique and raw sound is something that keeps the band going.

Death/Thrash Metal from Pribyslav (Czech republic). ZODIAC include but among the bands that after a very long pause came back with something that the listener is able to catch and bring to a boil. The recording goes like a steam engine after overhaul.
