... Kechley (b. 1947) is an omnivore, a composer with a roving and curious ear, not content to settle into one single style or idiom. From the tense rigor of Design and Construction to the passionate delicacy of Available Light, his music displays a wide range of colors, harmonies and ways of treating both horizontal and vertical musical space. That being said, his works are united by several qualities, chiefly his great interest in and use of motoric rhythms, and his highly detailed deployment of timbre.
“Not only to stretch my own boundaries, but particularly because I really want people to hear this music. I have looked for the extremes of trumpet repertoire and have compiled a varied programme with pieces in all sorts of colours and styles, ranging from classical through belle époque to contemporary.” (Wim Van Hesselt)
Jazz Icons: John Coltrane provides an epic 95-minute overview of a true giant of 20th-century music. Three separate shows reveal Coltrane's ascending creative arc from hard bop innovator as a member of the Miles Davis Quartet in 1960 to consummate bandleader in 1961 to unrivalled jazz visionary in 1965. This DVD not only features Trane's classic quartet with Elvin Jones (drums), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and McCoy Tyner (piano), but also spotlights him onstage with other jazz legends including Stan Getz, Eric Dolphy and Oscar Peterson. Includes mind-blowing versions of his signature tunes "My Favorite Things" and "Impressions".
Stage Dolls is the third studio album by Norwegian hard rock band Stage Dolls. Like the first two albums it was recorded in Trondheim, Norway using the same producer, Bjørn Nessjø, and engineer, Rune Nordahl.
“Powerplay”: the title says it all. The 9th album of Swiss power rockers SHAKRA, picks up where their last chart-breaking album, “Back on Track”, left off.The 13-track LP is the most varied SHAKRA album so far. The band has grown and blossomed in this formation throughout the 50 gigs they have played together. Songs such as “Dream of Mankind”, “Higher”, “Wonderful Life” and “Because Of You” display the whole variety of SHAKRA’s sound. The album was once again produced by Thom Blunier in the Powerride studios. “Powerplay” is a high-class traditional but at the same time up-to-date piece of work.
The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials — four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics — and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early '60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary.
Give 'Em Enough Rope, for all of its many attributes, was essentially a holding pattern for the Clash, but the double-album London Calling is a remarkable leap forward, incorporating the punk aesthetic into rock & roll mythology and roots music. Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There's punk and reggae, but there's also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn't tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call.
Although the Meat Puppets' previous album, 1991's Forbidden Places, was one of the Arizona trio's finest, the band wasn't completely happy with the album's sound, courtesy of longtime Dwight Yoakam producer Pete Anderson. So on their second album for London Records, 1994's Too High To Die, the trio hooked up with Butthole Surfer Paul Leary to put them back on track. Not only did they succeed, but they scored a big radio hit with the melodic rocker "Backwater," and the release became their first to be certified gold…
